 Worthy Brief - September 24, 2026

The find of a lifetime! 

Matthew 13:44 "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field."

Proverbs 2:2-4  So that you incline your ear to wisdom, And apply your heart to understanding; 3 Yes, if you cry out for discernment, And lift up your voice for understanding, 4 If you seek her as silver, And search for her as for hidden treasures; 

Yeshua (Jesus) has been showing us a Kingdom that loves to begin in hidden places: a seed pressed beneath the soil, leaven folded quietly into the dough, water in stone jars becoming wine before anyone at the wedding knew what had happened. Now He gives us one more hidden picture, treasure buried in a field. This time, though, He turns our attention somewhere new. The question isn't only what is hidden. It's what happens to a man the moment he finally sees it.

The man is working in a field that does not belong to him. Maybe he is plowing, or maybe just walking by, when his tool hits something that is not a stone. He digs and finds it. With one look, he knows what he has found is worth more than everything he owns. So he covers it up, goes home, sells everything, and buys the field.

At first, this story might sound like it is about sacrifice. But Yeshua calls it joy. "For joy over it he goes and sells all that he has." These words change the entire meaning. The man is not sad as he sells his things. He is almost running to do it. He is not focused on what he is giving up, but on what he has found.

Scripture uses the word matmon (מַטְמוֹן) for this kind of treasure. It comes from a word that means to hide or bury. Proverbs 2:4 talks about searching for wisdom "as for hidden treasures." Solomon promises that those who search will find the knowledge of God. In ancient times, when armies came, families buried their valuables and sometimes never returned. Fields could hide secrets, and a plow might uncover a fortune. Yeshua is saying the Kingdom is like that — a discovery that can turn an ordinary day into the day your life changes.

This is what revelation does. Before the treasure is seen, selling everything looks reckless. After the treasure is seen, holding on to everything else looks reckless. Nobody had to pressure this man. Nobody preached him into it or made him feel guilty. What he saw was worth so much that he was moved, and joy did the rest.

The Kingdom has always worked this way. It's why fishermen left their nets and Matthew walked away from the tax booth. They weren't grim recruits paying a hard price. They had seen the King, and suddenly the nets looked small. Paul said it plainly in Philippians 3:8: he counted all things loss for the surpassing worth of knowing His Lord. He wasn't celebrating loss. He was celebrating what he had gained.

Also notice that the man buys the whole field. In Scripture, land is more than just soil. It stands for inheritance, covenant, and a future for your children. When Jerusalem was under siege and the land seemed worthless, the Lord told Jeremiah to buy a field in Anathoth, sign the deed, and seal it in a clay jar. The reason was this: "houses and fields and vineyards shall be possessed again in this land" [Jeremiah 32:15]. Buying the field was a prophetic act. It showed, "I believe what God has hidden here."

That is what faith looks like. Sometimes we want the treasure but not the field, the promise but not the process, the glory but not the surrender. But this man accepts the rocks, weeds, and ordinary land along with the treasure, because he knows what is hidden there. Some times of obedience will seem ordinary, and some will be costly. But when you know what is buried there, you stop thinking about the cost and start thinking about the treasure.

There is an even deeper wonder. One Person looked at the world and saw treasure hidden in it: people buried under sin and ignored by others. He "for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross" [Hebrews 12:2]. Yeshua gave everything to buy the field because you were in it. Before you found the Kingdom, the King found you and rejoiced.

Take another look at the treasure you have received. You are forgiven, adopted, brought close, filled with His Spirit, trusted with His Word, and invited into the King’s purposes. You belong to Him, and that is an inheritance beyond measure. So focus on the treasure, focus on the King, and let joy change everything around His worth. Shema (שְׁמַע). Hear and respond. You are not losing what matters most; you have found what everything was meant for.
