Today's Daily Encounter Tuesday, May 28, 2024

The Truth That Sets Us Free

"To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, 'If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free'."1

The Pharisees rejected the Lord Jesus Christ even though He was telling the truth. But others listened and believed, as we see in today's passage. To them the Lord said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." (John 8:31-32). Many people, however, thought he was offering freedom from Roman political oppression or even from all the troubles of this life, but that's not what the Lord meant at all. He was offering freedom from sin.

When we believe in the truth of the gospel and turn to the Savior for salvation, we are freed from the penalty of sin, which is eternal damnation. But did you know that God's truth also frees us from the power of sin in this life? Although we will continue to struggle with temptation after we are saved, we now have within us the divine strength of Christ to resist and overcome it.

Do you feel trapped by sinful desires? As the Lord said, abiding in His Word is the key to true freedom. Fill your mind with its truth, and sin will lose its power over you, today and for all eternity.

Suggested Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You for leaving me equipped with Your Word. Thank you that the more I am filled with your Word, the less powerful and attractive sin is to me. Thank you, Lord, that your love makes me want to be obedient and please you with my lifestyle. Your truth sets me free. I pray in Jesus' name, Amen.
