Worthy Brief - May 31, 2024

Worthy Brief - May 31, 2024 Walk by faith and not by sight! 2 Kings 6:15-17 And when the servant of the man of God arose early and went out, there was an army, surrounding the city with horses and chariots. And his servant said to him, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?” So he answered, “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” And Elisha prayed, and said, “Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” Then the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. So often in our walks with the Lord, we become focused on what we can see, what we can hear and what we can sense in the physical realm. Like the young man in Elisha's day, we focus on the enemy’s attacks around and about us. At times we can get so focused on our physical circumstances that we forget that the Lord has already provided for us the victory! That servant was frightened by the size of the ene...

Today's Daily Encounter Friday, May 31, 2024 Attitude of Service "On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. 'Teacher', he asked, 'what must I do to inherit eternal life?' 'What is written in the Law?' he replied. 'How do you read it?' He answered, 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind', and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' 'You have answered correctly,' Jesus replied. 'Do this and you will live'."1  Many people in the world are in need today, and serving them is one of the most important callings of the Christian faith. Therefore, it is essential that believers commit themselves to helping others.  There are countless ways to serve others. For example, someone may decide to pray for a friend and be by their side until a difficult situation is resolved. Others might be available to answer a neighbor's questi...

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for May 31

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for May 31 “Be of Good Cheer ” - John 16:33 My LORD’s words are true as to the tribulation. I have my share of it beyond all doubt. The flail is not hung up out of the way, nor can I hope that it will be laid aside so long as I lie upon the threshing floor, How can I look to be at home in the enemy’s country, joyful while in exile, or comfortable in a wilderness? This is not my rest. This is the place of the furnace, and the forge, and the hammer. My experience tallies with my LORD’s words. I note how He bids me "be of good cheer." Alas! I am far too apt to be downcast. My spirit soon sinks when I am sorely tried. But I must not give way to this feeling. When my LORD bids me cheer up I must not dare to be cast down. What is the argument which He uses to encourage me? Why, it is His own victory. He says, "I have overcome the world." His battle was much more severe than mine. I have not yet resisted u...

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional: May 31st

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional: May 31st Morning “A greater than Solomon is here.” 1 Kings 10:1-13 1 Kings 10:1 Far off as she was, the glory of Solomon reached her, and she was moved to visit him, not only out of curiosity to behold his splendour, but from religious motives, that she might know more concerning the name of the Lord. Alas, there are thousands who show no interest in Jesus, though he is near them, and his gospel is preached in their streets. Sad is it that Solomon should attract a stranger so far away, and Jesus should be neglected by those who are near. 1 Kings 10:3 When sinners come to Jesus he will solve all their difficult questions, and both reveal and remove all their secret disquietudes. He is ever ready to communicate of his wisdom to all who come unto him, and they shall never in any instance find that their difficulties surpass his skill. 1 Kings 10:4-9 In like manner, although the gospel report concerning King Jesus greatly...

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for May 31

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for May 31 “Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child” (Matthew 18:4) You will never get a humble heart until it is born from above, from the heart of Christ. For man has lost his own humanity and alas, too often has a demon heart. God wants us, as Christians, to be simple, human, approachable and childlike. The Christians that we know and love best, and that are nearest to the Lord, are the most simple. Whenever we grow stilted we are only fit for a picture gallery, and we are only good on a pedestal; but, if we are going to live among men and love and save them, we must be approachable and human. All stiffness is but another form of self-consciousness. Ask Christ for a human heart, for a smile that will be as natural as your little child’s in your presence. Oh, how much Christ did by little touches! He never would have got at the woman of Samaria if He had come to her as the prophet. He sat down, a tired man, and said: “Give me a...

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for May 31

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for May 31 Tozer in the Morning The From's and To's The evangelical Church today is in the awkward position of being wrong while it is right, and a little preposition makes the difference. One place where we are wrong while we are right is in the relative stress we lay upon the prepositions to and from when they follow the word saved. For a long generation we have been holding the letter of truth while at the same time we have been moving away from it in spirit because we have been preoccupied with what we are saved from rather than what we have been saved to. The right relative importance of the two concepts is set forth by Paul in his first epistle to the Thessalonians: "Ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God; and to wait for his Son from heaven" (1 Thessalonians 1:9-10). The Christian is saved from his past sins. With these he simply has nothing more to do; t hey are among the things to be forgott...

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 31st May 2024 5/31 2 Kings 17:17 17 And they burned their sons and their daughters as offerings and used divination and omens and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the LORD, provoking him to anger. The lust for wealth and sexual promiscuity is not the only thing we have in common with those the northern tribes of Israel. They also practiced infanticide. They did it to gain the favor of gods that would give them abundant harvests. In other words, they did it for financial reasons. While abortion today is not done to offer the fetus to a god, it is often done for financial reasons. The cost to raise a child is considered. The fee for an abortion is only a tiny fraction of that cost. The abundance the idol worshiper hoped to gain offered them a freedom in life choices. They could possibly support another wife or a servant. They could then be freed up to enjoy the pleasures of life. This is also what some of today's mothers hope to gain by endin...

1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 (Complete Jewish Bible)

1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 (Complete Jewish Bible) For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a rousing cry, with a call from one of the ruling angels, and with God’s shofar; those who died united with the Messiah will be the first to rise; then we who are left still alive will be caught up with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air; and thus we will always be with the Lord. https://biblegateway.com

Today's Daily Encounter Thursday, May 30, 2024

Today's Daily Encounter Thursday, May 30, 2024 God's Word "What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words."1  At times, the Bible seems difficult to understand. After all, it is a compilation of documents from different times and places, written in various styles. However, it is not necessary to attend a seminary to read it, for we have the supreme Master, the Holy Spirit, who helps us to understand God's Word and enables us to obey it.  Obedience is a key part of understanding the Holy Scriptures. When we apply what we read, God's Word comes alive and we begin to hear God's voice more and more. Experience is an effective teacher, and living God's Word helps us move beyond mere remembrance to maturity in Chri...

This Day's Thought 30th May 2024

This Day's Thought 30th May 2024 He has kept and folded us from ten thousand ills when we did not know it.  In the midst of our security we should have perished every hour, but He sheltered us ‘from the terror by night and from the arrow that flieth by day’ —from the powers of evil that walk in darkness, and from snares of our own evil will.  He has kept us even against ourselves, and saved us even from our own undoing.  Let us read the traces of His hand in all our ways, in all the events, the chances, the changes of this troubled state.  It is He that folds and feeds us, that makes us to go in and out, to be faint or to find pasture, to lie down by the still waters, or to walk by the way that is parched and desert. Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for May 30

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for May 30 “Holy Foresight ” - Matthew 26:64 Ah, LORD, Thou wast in Thy lowest state when before Thy persecutors Thou wast made to stand like a criminal! Yet the eyes of Thy faith could see beyond Thy present humiliation into Thy future glory. What words are these, "Nevertheless - hereafter!" I would imitate Thy holy foresight, and in the midst of poverty, or sickness, or slander, I also would say, "Nevertheless - hereafter." Instead of weakness, Thou hast all power; instead of shame, all glory; instead of derision, all worship, Thy cross has not dimmed the splendor of Thy crown, neither has the spittle marred the beauty of Thy face. Say, rather, Thou are the more exalted and honored because of Thy sufferings. So, LORD, I also would take courage from the "hereafter." I would forget the present tribulation in the future triumph. Help thou me by directing me into Thy Father’s love and into T...

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for May 30 “I will put My Spirit within you” (Ezekiel 36:27) “I will put My Spirit within you, and I will cause you to walk in My statutes, and ye shall keep My judgments.” “I will put My fear in your hearts, and ye shall not turn away from Me.” Oh, friend, would not that be blessed, would not that be such a rest for you, all worn out with this strife in your own strength? Do you not want a strong man to conquer the strong man of self and sin? Do you not want a leader? Do you not want God Himself to be with you, to be your occupant? Do you not want rest? Are you not conscious of this need? Oh, this sense of being beaten back, longing, wanting, but not accomplishing. That is what He comes to do; “Ye shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost has come upon you.” Better than that, “Ye shall receive the power of the Holy Ghost coming upon you.” That is the true version, and really it is immensely different from the other. You shall not receive power yo...

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for May 30

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for May 30 Tozer in the Morning Man - The Dwelling Place of God - Choices Reveal - and Make - Character INTO NINE WORDS, having altogether but eleven syllables, Luke packs a world of universal truth: "Being let go, they went to their own company" (Acts 4:23). Every normal man has a "company," however small, where he feels at home and to which he will return when he is tired of being alone. The important thing about a man is not where he goes when he is compelled to go, but where he goes when he is free to go where he will. The apostles went to jail, and that is not too revealing because they went there against their will; but when they got out of jail and could go where they would they immediately went to the praying company. From this we learn a great deal about them. The choices of life, not the compulsions, reveal character. A man is absent from church Sunday morning. Where is he? If he is in a hospital having his ap...

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 30th May 2024 5/30 2 Kings 17:7 7 And this occurred because the people of Israel had sinned against the LORD their God, who had brought them up out of the land of Egypt from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and had feared other gods The history of the northern ten tribes is one evil king after another. Treachery and assassination made the average reign of the northern kings a fraction of the reign of the kings of Judah. Though God sent numerous prophets to remind them of God's promise to send them into exile if they turned to other gods, they would not listen. They became like the nations that that they had expelled when they first entered the land. The last king of the northern tribes of Israel was Hoshea. The king of Assyria conquered him and took the people into captivity just as God had warned. Only a small number remained in the land alongside those the king of Assyria sent to live there. The people of the land were then called Samaritan...

Worthy Brief - May 29, 2024 Take a leap of faith! Luke 17:5-6 And the apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.” So the Lord said, “If you have faith as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be pulled up by the roots and be planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you. The African Impala (an African antelope) are amazing creatures that can jump to a height of over 10 feet and cover a distance greater than 30 feet. Yet Impalas can be kept in a zoo inside an enclosure with a simple 3-foot wall. Why? Impalas will not jump if they can't see where their feet will land. Do we have something in common with these antelopes? Able to take great leaps of faith, but refusing to do it unless we can see where we'll land? George Mueller said of faith, "Faith does not operate in the realm of the possible. There is no glory for God in that which is humanly possible. Faith begins where man's power ends." In Biblical terms: "Now faith is the substance of thing...

Today's Daily Encounter Wednesday, May 29, 2024 Joyful Boundaries You have fixed all the boundaries of the earth; you have made summer and winter.1 Commands. Law. Instruction. Rules. Boundaries. None of these words sound very joyful, do they? When I was a teenager, I remember hearing that a child is happiest when they have boundaries; that young people need rules to thrive. And I thought, "No way! I can't wait to grow up and make my own rules and have the freedom to do as I please!" Yet, as I grew and matured, I found rules to be somewhat comforting; boundaries made me feel safe and yes, they even brought me joy!   The words I opened with are the Words that Scripture uses to describe God's Word. John 15:10-11 says, If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. Psalm 19:8 (NLT) says, The comma...

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for May 29

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for May 29 “Fishers Follow Him ” - Mark 1:17 Only by coming after Jesus can we obtain our heart’s desire and be really useful to our fellow men. Oh, how we long to be successful fishers for Jesus! We would sacrifice our lives to win souls. But we are tempted to try methods which Jesus would never have tried. Shall we yield to this suggestion of the enemy? If so, we may splash the water, but we shall never take the fish. We must follow after Jesus if we would succeed. Sensational methods, entertainment, and so forth -- are these coming after Jesus? Can we imagine the LORD Jesus drawing a congregation by such means as are now commonly used? What is the result of such expedients? The result is nothing which Jesus will count up at the last great day. We must keep to our preaching as our Master did, for by this means souls are saved. We must preach our LORD’s doctrine and proclaim a full and free gospel, for this is the net...

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for May 29

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for May 29 “The body is for the Lord and the Lord for the body” (1 Corinthians 6:13) Now, just as it was Christ Himself who justified us, and Christ Himself who was made unto us sanctification, so it is only by personal union with Him that we can receive this physical life and redemption. It is, indeed, not a touch of power upon our body which restores and then leaves it to the mere resources of natural strength and life for the future; but it is the vital and actual union of our mortal body with the risen body of our Lord Jesus Christ, so that His own very life comes into our frame and He is Himself made unto us strength, health and full physical redemption. He is alive forevermore and condescends to live in these houses of clay. They who thus receive Him may know Him as none ever can who exclude Him from the bodies which He has made for Himself. This is one of the deep and precious mysteries of the Gospel. “The body is for the Lord, and the Lord for...

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for May 29 Tozer in the Morning ANSWERING GOD'S CALL When will men and women realize that when God calls us out He is completely faithful to call us into something better? In his faith, Abraham was against idolatry and idol-making, but that was not his crusade. Because of his faith, God led him into a promised land, into possessions and into the lineage that brought forth the Messiah. The call of God is always to something better-keep that in mind! God calls us into the joys and reality of eternal life. He calls us into purity of life and spirit, so that we may acceptably walk with Him. He calls us into a life of service and usefulness that brings glory to Himself as God. He calls us into the sweetest fellowship possible on this earth - the fellowship of the family of God! If God takes away from us the old, wrinkled, beat-up dollar bill we clutch so desperately, it is only because He wants to exchange it for the whole federal mint, the...

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 29th May 2024 5/29 2 Kings 12:2 2 And Jehoash did what was right in the eyes of the LORD all his days, because Jehoiada the priest instructed him. When king Ahaziah died, his mother attempted to kill all the royal family. That means she killed her own grandchildren. The lust for power can compel people to do atrocious things. One of Ahaziah's sons was hidden and raised without her knowledge. When he was seven-years-old, the priests declared him king and his grandmother, Athaliah, was executed. Jehoash was faithful to the Lord during his reign, and the reason for that was found in his substitute father, Jehoiada the priest. He taught Jehoash in the ways of the LORD. It was under Jehoash reign that the temple was restored and the idols were removed and destroyed. We should never underestimate the influence of a mentor. That is what every godly parent should be to their children and even as much as possible to their grandchildren. The godly influence of...

Worthy Brief - May 28, 2024

Worthy Brief - May 28, 2024 Let's go deeper! James 4:7-10 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be afflicted, and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up. Why is it that some believers seem to go much deeper in their walk with God than others? I believe it has to do with a desire to pursue God and not to stop until they feel His very presence in their lives. These believers decide not to settle for anything less than a growing, vibrant relationship with God, and God honors that desire for those who seek it. Much of our walk is determined by how we desire Him. In James, the Lord promises that if you draw near to Him -- He will draw near to you. Our enemy, Satan, uses everything in his power to prevent that vibrant relation...

Today's Daily Encounter Tuesday, May 28, 2024 The Truth That Sets Us Free "To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, 'If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free'."1 The Pharisees rejected the Lord Jesus Christ even though He was telling the truth. But others listened and believed, as we see in today's passage. To them the Lord said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." (John 8:31-32). Many people, however, thought he was offering freedom from Roman political oppression or even from all the troubles of this life, but that's not what the Lord meant at all. He was offering freedom from sin. When we believe in the truth of the gospel and turn to the Savior for salvation, we are freed from the penalty of sin, which is eternal damnation. But did you know that God's truth also frees us f...

This Day's Verse 28th May 2024 I will direct all his ways: Isaiah 45:13 The King James Version https://thisdaysthought.org/

This Day's Thought 28th May 2024

This Day's Thought 28th May 2024 Strive to see God in all things without exception, and acquiesce in His will with absolute submission.  Do everything for God, uniting yourself to Him by a mere upward glance, or by the overflowing of your heart towards Him.  Never be in a hurry; do everything quietly and in a calm spirit.  Do not lose your inward peace for anything whatsoever, even if your whole world seems upset.  Commend all to God, and then lie still and be at rest in His bosom.  Whatever happens, abide steadfast in a determination to cling simply to God, trusting to His eternal love for you; and if you find that you have wandered forth from this shelter, recall your heart quietly and simply.  Maintain a holy simplicity of mind, and do not smother yourself with a host of cares, wishes, or longings, under any pretext. Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for May 28

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for May 28 “Remind God of His Promise ” - Genesis 32:12 This is the sure way of prevailing with the LORD in prayer. We may humbly remind Him of what He has said. Our faithful God will never run back from His word, nor will He leave it unfulfilled; yet He loves to be enquired of by His people and put in mind of His promise. This is refreshing to their memories, reviving to their faith, and renewing to their hope. God’s Word is given, not for His sake, but for ours. His purposes are settled, and He needs nothing to bind Him to His design of doing His people good; but He gives the promise for our strengthening and comfort. Hence He wishes us to plead it and say to Him, "Thou saidst." "I will surely do thee good" is just the essence of all the LORD’s gracious sayings, Lay a special stress on the word surely. He will do us good, real good, tasting good, only good, every good. He will make us good, and th...

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for May 28

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for May 28 “He humbled Himself”  (Philippians 2:8) One of the hardest things for a lofty and superior nature is to be under authority, to renounce his own will, and to take a place of subjection. But Christ took upon Him the form of a servant, gave up His independence, His right to please Himself, His liberty of choice, and after having from eternal ages known only to command, gave Himself up only to obey. I have seen occasionally the man who was once a wealthy employer a clerk in the same store. It was not an easy or graceful position, I assure you. But Jesus was such a perfect servant that His Father said: “Behold, My Servant in whom My soul delighteth.” All His life His watchword was, “The Son of Man came to minister.” “I am among you as He that doth serve.” “I can do nothing of Myself.” “Not My will, but Thine, be done.” Have you, beloved, learned the servant’s place? And once more, “He became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.”...

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for May 28

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for May 28 Tozer in the Morning Our Model Intercessor Two other considerations may help us here. One is that our Lord did on at least one occasion pray for sinners. "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing," was a request made to God on behalf of evil men. Is it not reasonable that if Christ prayed for sinners once, He may be expected to pray for them again? Also we must remember that Jesus was a Son of man and frequently referred to Himself by that title. As such, He had and has a relationship to the whole human race. Is it thinkable that He would not pray for the race to which He belonged? I realize that we are on holy ground right here, and common modesty would urge us to withhold any dogmatic judgments. But I believe that the question, Does our Lord pray for the unsaved? may be answered truthfully as follows: (1) As High Priest of His own redeemed people, Christ prays an efficacious prayer of intercessi...

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 28th May 2024 5/28 2 Kings 6:33 33 And while he was still speaking with them, the messenger came down to him and said, "This trouble is from the LORD! Why should I wait for the LORD any longer?" The capital of Israel, Samaria, was under siege by the Syrians. It was a long siege and the people of Samaria began to starve. Some were even resorting to cannibalism. The king had put on sackcloth, a sign of repenting, but hid it with outer clothes. He was so distraught and angry with God that he sent a messenger to Elisha with the intent of decapitating him. The messenger said to Elisha that their circumstances were from God, so why should they wait on God any longer? The king appeared at Elisha's door with one of his captains, right behind the messenger. Elisha told them that things would return to normal in one day. That was hard to believe, and the captain who was with the King said that even if God opened the windows of heaven it couldn't ...

Everything He gives you to do, you must do as well as ever you can, and that is the best possible preparation for what He may want you to do next. If people would but do what they have to do, they would always find themselves ready for what came next. http://www.george-macdonald.com/ https://biblegateway.com

Today's Daily Encounter Monday, May 27, 2024 In Sync with Jesus Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.1 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.2 Out of all the modern technology that we have, literally, at our fingertips today, one of my favorite features is the use of Bluetooth which allows you to sync your device to another and mirror whatever you may be listening to or watching on your mobile device to a fixed device through wireless internet. For example, my daughter loves to listen to Disney songs wherever she goes; so to keep her entertained in the car we can find the music she wants on our phones and mirror, or sync it to the car stereo via Bluetooth.   Imagine if we could mirror Jesus so easily! Imagine if the time we spent in prayer could be mirrored via Bluetooth to our lives and interactions with o...

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional: May 27th

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional: May 27th “As the Life -- So the Fruit ” - 2 Peter 1:8 If we desire to glorify our LORD by fruitfulness, we must have certain things within us; for nothing can come out of us which is not first of all within us. We must begin with faith, which is the groundwork of all the virtues; and then diligently add to it virtue, knowledge, temperance, and patience. With these we must have godliness and brotherly love. All these put together will most assuredly cause us to produce, as our life fruit, the clusters of usefulness, and we shall not be mere idle knowers but real doers of the Word. These holy things must not only be in us, but abound, or we shall be barren. Fruit is the overflow of life, and we must be full before we can flow over. We have noticed men of considerable parts and opportunities who have never succeeded in doing real good in the conversion of souls; and after close observation we have concluded that they lac...

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional: May 27th

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional: May 27th “The government shall be upon His shoulder” (Isaiah 9:6) You cannot make the heart restful by stopping its beating. Belladonna will do that, but that is not rest. Let the breath of life come—God’s life and strength—and there will be sweet rest. Home ties and family affection will not bring it. Deliverance from trouble will not bring it. Many a tried heart has said: “If this great trouble was only gone, I should have rest.” But as soon as one goes another comes. The poor, wounded deer on the mountain side, thinks if he could only bathe in the old mountain stream he would have rest. But the arrow is in its flesh and there is no rest for it till the wound is healed. It is as sore in the mountain lake as on the plain. We shall never have God’s rest and peace in the heart till we have given everything up to Christ—even our work—and believe He has taken it all, and we have only to keep still and trust. It is necessary to walk in holy obedience and...

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for May 27

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for May 27 Tozer in the Morning The Holy are Humble The Church in America suffered a greater loss than she has since discovered when she rejected the example of good men and chose for her pattern the celebrity of the hour. Human greatness cannot be determined by popularity polls nor by the number of lines any man rates in the public press. It is altogether unlikely that we know who our greatest men are. One thing is sure, however--the greatest man alive today is the best man alive today. That is not open to debate. To discover the good great man (granted that it would be to our profit to do so) would require more than human wisdom. For the holy man is also the humble man and the humble man will not advertise himself nor allow others to do it for him. Spiritual virtues run deep and silent. Like the tide or the pull of gravitation or the shining of the sun, they work without noise, but their gracious ministrations are felt around the whole e...

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 27th May 2024 5/27 2 Kings 6:5 5 But as one was felling a log, his axe head fell into the water, and he cried out, "Alas, my master! It was borrowed." The sons of the prophets had outgrown their living quarters. They asked permission from Elisha to build a bigger dwelling. He told them to go do it, but they insisted that he come with them. While they were felling trees along the muddy Jordan River, one of them lost an axe head in the water. He cried out to Elisha, "It was borrowed." He most likely did not have the money to replace it. Elisha did something very unusual. He cut off a stick and threw it in the water where the axe head had fallen. The axe head floated to the surface! He told the man to reach out and grab it. Does God care about little things like a lost axe head? Apparently He does. Is anything too small a detail to take to the Lord? The son of the prophets could have just thrown up his hands and said, "Oh well, I gu...

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional: May 26th “Commonest Things Blessed ” - Exodus 23:25 What a promise is this! To serve God is in itself a high delight. But what an added privilege to have the blessing of the LORD resting upon us in all things! Our commonest things become blessed when we ourselves are consecrated to the LORD. Our LORD Jesus took bread and blessed it; behold, we also eat of blessed bread. Jesus blessed water and made it wine: the water which we drink is far better to us than any of the wine with which men make merry; every drop has a benediction in it. The divine blessing is on the man of God in everything, and it shall abide with him at every time. What if we have only bread and water! Yet it is blessed bread and water. Bread and water we shall have. That is implied, for it must be there for God to bless it. "Thy bread shall be given thee, and thy waters shall be sure." With God at our table, we not only ask a blessing, but w...
