God's Word

"What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words."1

At times, the Bible seems difficult to understand. After all, it is a compilation of documents from different times and places, written in various styles. However, it is not necessary to attend a seminary to read it, for we have the supreme Master, the Holy Spirit, who helps us to understand God's Word and enables us to obey it.

Obedience is a key part of understanding the Holy Scriptures. When we apply what we read, God's Word comes alive and we begin to hear God's voice more and more. Experience is an effective teacher, and living God's Word helps us move beyond mere remembrance to maturity in Christ.

On the contrary, by not acting on biblical truths, we do not receive the awareness that comes from experience. Moreover, if we have not obeyed what God has previously revealed to us, why would He share His deepest truths? The book of Psalms says, "The friendship of the Lord is for those who fear him, and he makes known to them his covenant." (Psalm 25:14 ESV), and goes on to say that those who fear him obey his commandments and have the promise of a "good understanding" (Psalm 111:10 ESV).

As you read the Bible, seek God's instructions, and with the help of the Holy Spirit, commit to obeying them. You will soon discover how the application of divine truth gives understanding and wisdom.

Suggested Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank you that as children of God, we have received the Holy Spirit, and through Him you make known to us the instructions for how we should conduct ourselves in life. Thank you, Lord, that with Your Word and with the Holy Spirit, we have what it takes to live a life that honors and glorifies You. I pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

1. 1 Corinthians 2:12-13.
