Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional: June 20th

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional: June 20th Morning “Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.” 2 Kings 11:1-4 , 2 Kings 11:10-18 , 2 Kings 11:20 2 Kings 11:1 Like a true descendant of Ahab, she stopped at nothing which could promote her own ambition. Well might she be called “Athaliah that wicked woman.” The seed of David was almost destroyed by her, but the Lord interposed, for the sceptre could not depart from Judah until Messiah came. The covenant promise to David was bound up in a single life, but it did not fail. 2 Kings 11:2 , 2 Kings 11:3 Athaliah was not likely to go to the Lord’s house to find the child, for she seldom troubled that sacred place. David had lovingly cared for God’s house, and now the Lord shelters the hope of his servant’s race in the chambers of the temple. 2 Kings 11:4 These he appointed to act as a body-guard to the king, when he should be brought forth publicly to be crowned. Matthew Henry remarks that Jehoiada w...

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for June 20

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for June 20 Tozer in the Morning Walking in Truth Any man who would escape the heavy tax which humankind lays upon the righteous must make a satisfactory compromise with error. This is so because sin has perverted the nature of things. He that departeth from evil maketh himself a prey is as true now as when it was first uttered. Little as we like to admit it, two thousand years of Christianity have not made much difference. The human race is still cursed with what Bacon called a natural though corrupt love of the lie itself. Nevertheless the hazards of truth should not count in our final tally. Truth is such a royal patron that we should embrace it without regard to cost. The cautious calculator, who tinkers with truth for fear of consequences, is no worthy servant of such a noble master. We Christians above all people should value truth, for we profess to belong to the One who is the Truth. The Stoics who had no access to the Scriptu...

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for June 20

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for June 20 “Let every man abide in the same calling wherein he was called” (1 Corinthians 7:20) O ye who complain about your calling or fret about the changes and trials of life, how do you know but that these very changes are the divine methods by which God’s purposes of blessing and usefulness concerning you be fulfilled? Had Aquila not been compelled to leave Rome and break up his home and business, he would probably have never met with Paul, and been called to the knowledge and service of Christ through this providential meeting. Had he not been a working man, and pursuing his ordinary avocation he would not have been brought into contact with the apostle. It was in the line of their calling, their common duties, and the providential changes of their life that God called them. And so He meets us. Do not try hard to run away from it, but, as the apostle has so finely put it, “Let every man abide in the same calling wherein he is called, let h...

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for June 20

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for June 20 “The LORD Our Companion ”  - Psalms 23:4 Sweet are these words in describing a deathbed assurance. How many have repeated them in their last hours with intense delight!  But the verse is equally applicable to agonies of spirit in the midst of life. Some of us, like Paul, die daily through a tendency to gloom of soul. Bunyan puts the Valley of the Shadow of Death far earlier in the pilgrimage than the river which rolls at the foot of the celestial hills. We have some of us traversed the dark and dreadful defile of "the shadow of death" several times, and we can bear witness that the LORD alone enabled us to bear up amid its wild thought, its mysterious horrors, its terrible depressions. The LORD has sustained us and kept us above all real fear of evil, even when our spirit has been overwhelmed. We have been pressed and oppressed, but yet we have lived, for we have felt the presence of the Great Sh...

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 20th June 2026

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 20th June 2026 June 20 1 Kings 17:14-15 14For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the LORD gives rain on the land.'" 15She went away and did as Elijah had told her. So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family. Once the Kerith Ravine dried up, the Lord sent Elijah to the home of a Gentile woman. If you thought ravens were stingy, try humans. But a few verses earlier the LORD said He had commanded her to feed Elijah. Elijah gave her a real test of faith by asking her to feed him first and then cook her and her son a meal from the little left in her jar. If the LORD had not commanded her to do this, I doubt she would have even considered it. Even though there was a promise that a miracle would happen, consider that this woman is not Jewish. The prophet before her had been camping out in a ravine for months. Who would ...
