Worthy Brief - January 23, 2026

Worthy Brief - January 23, 2026 From prison chains to Paul's pulpit! Acts 16:25-31  But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. 26  Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone's chains were loosed. 27  And the keeper of the prison, awaking from sleep and seeing the prison doors open, supposing the prisoners had fled, drew his sword and was about to kill himself. 28  But Paul called with a loud voice, saying, "Do yourself no harm, for we are all here." 29  Then he called for a light, ran in, and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. 30  And he brought them out and said, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" 31  So they said, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household."  Paul's chains were never meant to silence him -- they were position...

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for January 23

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for January 23 “I know a man in Christ” (2 Corinthians 12:2) It is a great deliverance to lose one’s self. There is no heavier millstone that one can be compelled to carry than self-consciousness. It is so easy to get introverted and coiled round one’s self in our spiritual consciousness. There is nothing that is so easy to fasten on as our misery; there is nothing that is more apt to produce self-consciousness than suffering, until it becomes almost a settled habit to hold on to our burden, and pray it unceasingly into the very face of God, until our very prayer saturates us with our own misery, instead of asking for power to drop ourselves altogether, and leave ourselves in His loving hands and know that we are free, and then rise into the blessed liberty of His higher thoughts and will, and His love and care for others. The very act of letting go of ourselves really lifts us into a higher plane, and relieves us from the thing that is hurting. ...

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for January 23

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for January 23 “A Completed Sacrifice ”  - Psalms 41:1 If by that laying on of his hand the bullock became the offerer’s sacrifice, how much more shall Jesus become ours by the laying on of the hand of faith?  My faith doth lay her hand On that dear head of Thine, While like a penitent I stand, And there confess my sin.  If a bullock could be accepted for him to make atonement for him, how much more shall the LORD Jesus be our full and all-sufficient propitiation? Some quarrel with the great truth of substitution; but as for us, it is our hope, our joy, our boast, our all. Jesus is accepted for us to make atonement for us, and we are "accepted in the Beloved." Let the reader take care at once to lay his hand on the LORD’s completed sacrifice, that by accepting it he may obtain the benefit of it. If he has done so once, let him do it again. If he has never done so, let him put out his hand without a moment’s d...

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for January 23

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for January 23 Tozer in the Morning Man - The Dwelling Place of God - What We Think of Ourselves Is Important THE MAN WHO IS SERIOUSLY CONVINCED that he deserves to go to hell is not likely to go there, while the man who believes that he is worthy of heaven will certainly never enter that blessed place. I use the word "seriously" to accent true conviction and to distinguish it from mere nominal belief. It is possible to go through life believing that we believe, while actually having no conviction more vital than a conventional creed inherited from our ancestors or picked up from the general religious notions current in our social circle. If this creed requires that we admit our own depravity we do so and feel proud of our fidelity to the Christian faith. But from the way we love, praise and pamper ourselves it is plain enough that we do not consider ourselves worthy of damnation. A revealing proof of this is seen in the squeami...

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for January 23

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for January 23 Morning  “The Lord is my helper.”  Genesis 31:36-44  Jacob reached the house of Laban, and there married his two wives, Leah and Rachel. After toiling hard for Laban for years, he felt a longing to see his father’s face again. Besides, he felt that Laban had treated him badly, and that it was time to separate and become his own master. He therefore stole away with his family and his goods, but was hotly pursued by Laban, who evidently intended him no good. The night before Laban overtook Jacob the Lord visited him in a dream, and warned him against doing Jacob any violence, or attempting to entice him back to Haran. This was a very gracious interposition, and the patriarch had abundant cause to bless the Lord for it. Laban was thus providentially restrained from doing mischief. However, he accused Jacob of having stolen his images: Jacob did not know that Rachel had concealed them, and when Laban c...

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 23rd January 2026 January 23 Genesis 25:23 23The LORD said to her, "Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger." The unnamed servant of Abraham went to Haran and sought out a wife for Isaac. If we follow the analogy of Isaac being a foreshadow of Christ, then this servant is like the Holy Spirit seeking the bride of Christ. He finds Rebecca and takes her from her father's house without delay. When Rebecca is joined with her husband, she finds this war within her. Is that not true of us, the bride of Christ. The flesh is warring against the spirit and the spirit against the flesh (Galatians 5:17). The custom of that day was for the firstborn to receive twice as much as any other heir along with the responsibility and authority of the father. That has carried down to this day in many Eastern countries, but God reversed the o...

Worthy Brief - January 22, 2026

Worthy Brief - January 22, 2026  When obstacles become pathways! Exodus 14:12-15  Is this not the word that we told you in Egypt, saying, 'Let us alone that we may serve the Egyptians'? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than that we should die in the wilderness." 13  And Moses said to the people, "Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which He will accomplish for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall see again no more forever. 14  The LORD will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace." 15  And the LORD said to Moses, "Why do you cry to Me? Tell the children of Israel to go forward.  Israel stood trapped -- Pharaoh behind them, the sea before them, nowhere to turn. The Red Sea was not a minor inconvenience; it was an impossible obstruction. Yet God did not remove the obstacle before moving the people—He moved through it. Authority does not always eliminate what stands in yo...

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for January 22

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for January 22 “His wife hath made herself ready” (Revelation 19:7) There is danger in becoming morbid even in preparing for the Lord’s coming. We remember a time in our life when we had devoted ourselves to spend a month in waiting upon the Lord for a baptism of the Holy Ghost, and before the end of the month, the Lord shook us out of our seclusion and compelled us to go out and carry His message to others; and as we went, He met us in the service. There is a musty, monkish way of seeking a blessing, and there is a wholesome, practical holiness which finds us in the company of the Lord Himself not only in the closet and on the mountain-top of prayer, but among publicans and sinners, and in the practical duties of life. It seems to us that the practical preparation for the Lord’s coming consists, first, of a very full entering into fellowship with Him in our own spiritual life, and letting Him not only cleanse us, but perfect us in all the finer ...

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for January 22

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for January 22 Morning  “A righteous man hateth lying.”  Genesis 27:1-5 , Genesis 27:17-29  Genesis 27:1-5  When Rebekah heard this she determined to obtain the blessing for her favourite son Jacob by a crafty stratagem. She prepared two kids of goats in a savoury manner, dressed Jacob in Esau’s clothes, put skins upon his hands and neck that he might appear to be hairy like his brother, and sent him in to deceive his father.  Genesis 27:20  When we begin to sin we go from bad to worse. It was base enough of Jacob to utter so many falsehoods, but to bring in the Lord God of his father to give them the appearance of truth, was much worse.  Genesis 27:24  Thus Jacob persisted in his falsehood. This narrative shows us the truthfulness of God’s word, since it does not conceal the faults of its most eminent saints. Had the Old Testament been a cunningly devised fable, it would never have exhib...

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for January 22

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for January 22 “Christian Liberality ”  - Psalms 41:1 To think about the poor and let them lie on our hearts is a Christian man’s duty; for Jesus put them with us and near us when He said, "The poor ye have always with you."  Many give their money to the poor in a hurry, without thought; and many more give nothing at all. This precious promise belongs to those who "consider" the poor, look into their case, devise plans for their benefit, and considerately carry them out. We can do more by care than by cash, and most with two together. To those who consider the poor, the LORD promises His own consideration in times of distress. He will bring us out of trouble if we help others when they are in trouble. We shall receive very singular providential help if the LORD sees that we try to provide for others. We shall have a time of trouble, however generous we may be; but if we are charitable, we may put i...

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for January 22 Tozer in the Morning Three Faithful Wounds "Faithful are the wounds of a friend," says the Holy Spirit in Proverbs 27:6. And lest we imagine that the preacher is the one who does the wounding, I want to read Job 5:17,18: "Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty: for he maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands make whole."  You see, the one who does the wounding here is not the servant, but the Master Himself. So with that in our minds, I want to talk to you about three faithful wounds of a friend.  In order to get launched into my message let me introduce a little lady who has been dead for about six hundred years. She once lived and loved and prayed and hadn't much light and she hadn't any way to get much light, but the beautiful thing about her was that with what little Biblical light she had, she walked with God so ...

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 22nd January 2026 January 22 Genesis 22:7-8,14 7Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, "Father?" "Yes, my son?" Abraham replied. "The fire and wood are here," Isaac said, "but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?" 8Abraham answered, "God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son." And the two of them went on together. 14So Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. And to this day it is said, "On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided." And God did provide Himself as the lamb, the lamb of atonement that took away the sins of the world. For almost two millenniums the Jewish people asked the same question. Where is the lamb? Where is the One who will satisfy God? Shepherds could not provide the lamb; He had to come from the Great Shepherd. And in the fullness of time, God did provide the Lamb. God the Father and God the Son went together, the two of the...

Worthy Brief - January 21, 2026

Worthy Brief - January 21, 2026 From Giolath's sword to David's weapon!  1 Samuel 17:45-47  Then David said to the Philistine, "You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46  This day the LORD will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you and take your head from you. And this day I will give the carcasses of the camp of the Philistines to the birds of the air and the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. 47  Then all this assembly shall know that the LORD does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the LORD's, and He will give you into our hands."  1 Samuel 21:9  So the priest said, "The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you killed in the Valley of Elah, there it is, wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod. If you will take that, take it. For there is no other exc...

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for January 21

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for January 21 “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17) An important help in the life of prayer is the habit of bringing everything to God, moment by moment, as it comes to us in life. This may be established as a habit on the principle on which all habits are formed, of repeated and constant attention, moment by moment, until that which is at first an act of will, becomes spontaneous and second nature. If we will watch our lives we shall find that God meets the things that we commit to Him in prayer with special blessing, and often allows the best things that we have not committed to Him to be ineffectual, simply to remind us of our dependence upon Him for everything. It is very gracious and mindful of Him thus gently to compel us to remember Him and to hold us so close to Him that we cannot get away even the length of a single minute from His all-sustaining arm. “In everything ... let our requests be made known unto God.” Let us bring our ...

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for January 21

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for January 21 “God’s Enemies Shall Bow ”  - Exodus 7:5 The ungodly world is hard to teach. Egypt does not know Jehovah and therefore dares to set up its idols and even ventures to ask, "Who is the LORD?" Yet the LORD means to break proud hearts, whether they will or not. When His judgments thunder over their heads, darken their skies, destroy their harvests, and slay their sons, they begin to discern somewhat of Jehovah’s power. There will yet be such things done in the earth as shall bring skeptics to their knees. Let us not be dismayed because of their blasphemies, for the LORD can take care of His own name, and He will do so in a very effectual manner.  The salvation of His own people was another potent means of making Egypt know that the God of Israel was Jehovah, the living and true God. No Israelite died by any one of the ten plagues. None of the chosen seed were drowned in the Red Sea. Even so, the s...

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for January 21

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for January 21 Morning  “He giveth not account of any of his matters.”  Romans 9:1-13  We omit some of the minor details of the history as contained in Genesis, and pass on to the birth of Isaac’s twin sons, Esau and Jacob. Let us see how the New Testament explains the Old. We shall read  In this chapter the apostle illustrates the doctrine of election by the history of the households of Abraham and Isaac, in which the will of the Lord made differences irrespective of merit. Here he brings us into a great deep; but if we only wish to know what God reveals and no more, we may safely follow where Scripture leads. Election is not a fit subject for idle curiosity, neither is it to be passed over in neglect, for whatever is taught us in the Word is profitable for some gracious purpose.  Romans 9:1-3  Paul did not write as he did because he hated the nation to which he belonged. Far from it. He would hav...

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for January 21

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for January 21 Tozer in the Morning DEMONSTRATE YOUR FAITH We know of many who have been deceived into believing that the learning and the memorizing of Christian doctrine is all-sufficient. They actually think that somehow they are better off for having learned the doctrines of religion. God actually asks of us what He asked of Noah long ago! "Demonstrate your faith in God in your everyday life!" It is evident that God did not say to Noah, "I am depending on you to hold the proper orthodox doctrines. Everything will be just fine if you stand up for the right doctrines." I have read a statement by Martin Lloyd-Jones, the English preacher and writer, in which he said: "It is perilously close to being sinful for any person to learn doctrine for doctrine's sake." I agree with his conclusion that doctrine is always best when it is incarnated-when it is seen fleshed out in the lives of godly men and women. Our...

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 21st January 2026

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 21st January 2026 January 21 Genesis 22:1-2 1Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, "Abraham!" "Here I am," he replied. 2Then God said, "Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about." Isaac was one of the greatest foreshadows of Christ. Throughout this story, we have pictures of what will happen in the life of Jesus. Isaac's birth was miraculous. He is the son of promise, the only son, whom his father loved. On the mountain Moriah (the same place Jesus was sacrificed), he carried the wood for his execution. Since Abraham was well over 100, I assume the boy was willingly bound by his father, just as Jesus willingly went to the cross. We will not read of Isaac again until he receives his bride. These are amazing parallels for us to see that God is in the details and knows the end from t...

Worthy Brief - January 20, 2026

Worthy Brief - January 20, 2026 Taking hold of what God has judged! Exodus 4:2-4 So the LORD said to him, "What is that in your hand?" He said, "A rod." 3 And He said, "Cast it on the ground." So he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from it. 4 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Reach out your hand and take it by the tail" (and he reached out his hand and caught it, and it became a rod in his hand), Following yesterday's revelation that authority flows from settled identity, the Spirit brings us to a decisive truth: authority is revealed when what once intimidated you is brought under obedience. God asked Moses, “What is that in your hand?” It was a staff -- ordinary and familiar -- until obedience exposed what fear had hidden. When the staff became a serpent, Moses fled. Yet God did not remove the threat; He issued a command that redefined dominion: “Pick it up.” When Moses obeyed, the serpent submitted and returned to...

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for January 20

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for January 20 “Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of” (Luke 9:55) Someone has said that the most spiritual people are the easiest to get along with. When one has a little of the Holy Ghost it is like “a little learning, a dangerous thing”; but a full baptism of the Holy Spirit, and a really disciplined, stablished and tested spiritual life, makes one simple, tender, tolerant, considerate of others, and like a little child. James and John, in their early zeal, wanted to call down fire from heaven on the Samaritans. But John, the aged, allowed Demetrius to exclude him from the church, and suffered in Patmos for the kingdom and with the patience of Jesus. And aged Paul was willing to take back even Mark, whom he had refused as a companion in his early ministry, and to acknowledge that he was profitable to him for the ministry. I want the love that cannot help but love; Loving, like God, for very sake of love. A spring so full that it must overflow...

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for January 20

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for January 20 Morning “Follow thou Me.” Genesis 24:50-67 Laban, having heard Eliezer’s story and seen the jewels, which were no doubt great arguments with his mercenary mind, consented that Rebekah should go with him to Isaac. Genesis 24:51 It is always right for young people to seek the consent of parents and natural guardians in such an important business. Genesis 24:52 He was too devout a man to fail to adore ingratitude; too many, however, only pray in need, but forget to worship in thanksgiving. Genesis 24:53 He was a wise steward, and knew what arguments weighed most with Laban. Genesis 24:54 God’s servants should imitate this steward, and never be loiterers. Genesis 24:56 We ought not easily to be delayed from duty. To loiter is to disobey. When God speeds us we should speed indeed. Genesis 24:58 How happy would ministers be if all young people could be as readily led to the great Bridegroom, the Lord Jesus. He...

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for January 20 “The Overcomer ” - Romans 10:9 No man may turn his back in the day of battle or refuse to go to the holy war. We must fight if we would reign, and we must carry on the warfare till we overcome every enemy, or else this promise is not for us, since it is only for "him that overcometh." We are to overcome the false prophets who have come into the world and all the evils which accompany their teaching. We are to overcome our own faintness of heart and tendency to decline from our first love. Read the whole of the Spirit’s word to the church at Ephesus. If by grace we win the day, as we shall if we truly follow our conquering Leader, then we shall be admitted to the very center of the paradise of God and shall be permitted to pass by the cherub and his flaming sword and come to that guarded tree, whereof if a man eat, he shall live forever. We shall thus escape that endless death which is the doom ...

Tozer Devotional for January 20 Tozer in the Morning That Baby in the Manger One of the most beautiful descriptions of our Savior to be found anywhere is that given by Isaiah in the 53chapter of his prophecy: ?He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground? (verse 2). Those who have at any time been close to the soil will see at once a young shoot just pushing through the ground and will feel the exquisite precision of the word ?tender? when applied to it. The delicate sprout appears to be mostly water, held together one scarcely knows how, and so brittle that it will snap asunder at the slightest touch. Only after the passing of several days does it toughen up enough to endure external pressure without damage. While a newborn babe is not as fragile as the tender plant just emerged from the soil, the likeness is too plain to miss, and the prophet spoke well when he compared the one to the other. The helpless, crying human thin...

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 20th January 2026 January 20 Genesis 21:10-11 10and she said to Abraham, "Get rid of that slave woman and her son, for that slave woman's son will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac." 11The matter distressed Abraham greatly because it concerned his son. Sarah had enough of Hagar and Ishmael. She now had the son of promise. The Apostle Paul tells us this is a picture of Judaism and Christianity (Galatians 4:22, 31). The one was an effort of man trying to bring about the promises of God through human effort. The other is the promise coming to pass by faith. Eventually all our human effort to please God must give way to what God does for us by grace through faith. Those born in the natural way (human effort) will persecute those born of the promise (by grace through faith). All your striving will not make you like the Son. Only a yielding to His life in you can transform you so that His life comes through. The human effort caused...

Worthy Brief - January 19, 2026

Worthy Brief - January 19, 2026 Authority begins with identity! Luke 10:19-20 Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. 20 Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven." As we move forward from the ground we have already taken -- beginning in November with the revelation of our identity in the Messiah, and then pressing into the responsibility that identity demands -- we now arrive at what cannot be avoided, delayed, or denied: authority. This is not a new subject. It is the inevitable consequence of truth rightly received. Identity laid the foundation. Responsibility brought alignment. Authority is the release. What God establishes within a believer, He always intends to express through that believer. He never forms sons merely for containment. He forms them for representation. Identit...

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for January 19

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for January 19 “Mouth Confession; Heart Belief ” - Romans 10:9 There must be confession with the mouth. Have I made it? Have I openly avowed my faith in Jesus as the Savior whom God has raised from the dead, and have I done it in God’s way! Let me honestly answer this question. There must also be belief with the heart. Do I sincerely believe in the risen LORD Jesus? Do I trust in Him as my sole hope of salvation? Is this trust from my heart? Let me answer as before God. If I can truly claim that I have both confessed Christ and believed in Him, then I am saved. The text does not say it may be so, but it is plain as a pikestaff and clear as the sun in the heavens: "Thou shalt be saved." As a believer and a confessor, I may lay my hand on this promise and plead it before the LORD God at this moment, and throughout life, and in the hour of death, and at the Day of Judgment. I must be saved from the guilt of sin...

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for January 19

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for January 19 “Prove me now herewith” (Malachi 3:10) We once heard a simple old colored man say something that we have never forgotten. “When God tests You it is a good time for you to test Him by putting His promises to the proof, and claiming from Him just as much as your trials have rendered necessary.” There are two ways of getting out of a trial. One is to simply try to get rid of the trial, and be thankful when it is over. The other is to recognize the trial as a challenge from God to claim a larger blessing than we have ever had, and to hail it with delight as an opportunity of obtaining a larger measure of Divine grace. Thus even the adversary becomes an auxiliary, and the things that seem to be against us turn out to be for the furtherance of our way. Surely, this is to be more than conquerors through Him who loved us. Blessed Rose of Sharon Breathe upon our heart, Fill us with Thy fragrance, Keep us as Thou art. Then Thy life will make...

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for January 19

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for January 19 Morning “Thy dead men shall live.” Job 14:1-13 As the last lesson brought us to Machpelah with the weeping train who buried Sarah, it may be a fitting season for a “meditation among the tombs.” Job 14:1 Our life is not short and sweet, but brief and bitter. Its only fulness is fulness of trouble. Sin has done all this. Job 14:2 The flower is not always allowed to flourish till it withers, but is cut down by the scythe while yet in its glory; and so is man full often taken away in the midst of his days. Job 14:3 Job wonders that the Lord should think upon so frail a creature as mortal man. Job 14:4 The length of our troubles and the shortness of our lives are both caused by the impurity of our nature; and that is a matter of inheritance, for from unclean flesh there cannot come a pure posterity. A poisonous plant bears poisonous seed. A fallen man becomes the father of fallen children. Job 14:5-6 We have...
