Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for August 31

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for August 31 Tozer in the Morning GLORIOUS CONTRADICTIONS God has revealed so many glorious contradictions in the lives and conduct of genuine Christian believers that it is small wonder that we are such an amazement to this world. The Christian is dead and yet he lives forever. He died to himself and yet he lives in Christ. The Christian saves his own life by losing it and he is in danger of losing it by trying to save it. It is strange but true that the Christian is strongest when he is weakest and weakest when he is strongest. When he gets down on his knees thinking he is weak, he is always strong. The Christian is in least danger when he is fearful and trusting God and in the most danger when he feels the most self-confident. He is most sinless when he feels the most sinful and he is the most sinful when he feels the most sinless. The Christian actually has the most when he is giving away the most; and in all of these ways, the C...

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for August 31

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for August 31 “Divine, Ever-Living, Unchanging ” - 1 Peter 1:25 All human teaching and, indeed, all human beings shall pass away as the grass of the meadow; but we are here assured that the Word of the LORD is of a very different character, for it shall endure forever. We have here a divine gospel; for what word can endure forever but that which is spoken by the eternal God? We have here an ever-living gospel, as full of vitality as when it first came from the lips of God; as strong to convince and convert, to regenerate and console, to sustain and sanctify as ever it was in its first days of wonder-working. We have an unchanging gospel which is not today green grass and tomorrow dry hay but always the abiding truth of the immutable Jehovah. Opinions alter, but truth certified by God can no more change than the God who uttered it. Here, then, we have a gospel to rejoice in, a word of the LORD upon which we may lean al...

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for August 31

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for August 31 Morning “He marvelled because of their unbelief.” Matthew 13:31-33 , Matthew 13:44-58 Our loving Lord has left us many priceless parables, in which great truths are made plain to our understandings. He deserves our love for thus condescending to our dulness. Matthew 13:31 , Matthew 13:32 Mustard of this kind is common in Palestine. Nothing at its commencement could be smaller, or less conspicuous, than the church of Christ; nothing in the end shall be so great and honourable. Already many happy souls, like birds, are resting in its branches. Matthew 13:33 Silently, mysteriously, and potently it works, and so do good or evil influences in society. Matthew 13:45 , Matthew 13:46 The first man is the suddenly converted sinner, who finds Jesus, though he looked not for him; the second is the diligent seeker, who at last discovers Jesus for whom he had sought. They both agree in setting the highest value upon ...

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for August 31

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for August 31 “Lead me in the way everlasting” (Psalms 139:24) There is often apparently but little difference in two distinct lives between constant victory and frequent victory. But that one little difference constitutes a world of success or failure. The one is the Divine, the other is the human; the one is the everlasting way, the other the transient and the imperfect. God wants to lead us to the way everlasting, and to establish us and make us immovable as He. We little know the seriousness of the slightest surrender. It is but the first step in a downward progression, and God only knows where it shall end. Let us be “not of them that draw back unto perdition, but of them that believe unto the saving our the soul.” Your victory to-day is but preparing the way for a greater victory to-morrow, and your surrender to-day is opening the door for a more terrible defeat in the days to come. Let us, therefore, whatever we have claimed from our bless...

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 31st August 2025

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 31st August 2025 8/31 Galatians 6:7 7 Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. This is a principle by God's design, just as much as any physical law such as gravity. Our actions will have consequences. If we practice evil toward others, we can expect it to come back to us. If we sow kindness and grace, those seeds of blessing will return to us. The results of what we sow may not come from the same people into whose lives we have sown, but they will come. God is not passively sitting in heaven watching what He started play out all on its own. He is actively engaged and sovereignly managing the results of our choices. Even this week I talked with a man who had just months before complained that he was constantly sowing good but nothing but bad seemed to come his way. Today he is reaping the good. Most people will not realize all the good they will reap until they stand before the Lord. Do you need mercy and...

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for August 30

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for August 30 “Solace, Security, Satisfaction ” - 2 Samuel 23:5 This is not so much one promise as an aggregate of promises -- a box of pearls. the covenant is the ark which contains all things. These are the last words of David, but they may be mine today. Here is a sigh: things are not with me and mine as I could wish; there are trials, cares, and sins. These make the pillow hard. Here is a solace -- "He hath made with me an everlasting covenant." Jehovah has pledged Himself to me, and sealed the compact with the blood of Jesus. I am bound to my God and my God to me. This brings into prominence a security, since this covenant is everlasting, well ordered, and sure. There is nothing to fear from the lapse of time, the failure of some forgotten point, or the natural uncertainty of things. The covenant is a rocky foundation to build on for life or for death. David feels satisfaction: he wants no more for salv...

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for August 30

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for August 30 Morning “My word shall not return unto Me void.” Matthew 13:1-23 Matthew 13:1 , Matthew 13:2 A most delightful instance of out-of-door preaching, of which the more the better, for without it great numbers of our fellowmen will never hear the gospel. The natural objects around him no doubt supplied the Lord with his illustrations, and these were so homely and full of meaning, that they arrested the attention of all. Matthew 13:3 , Matthew 13:4 the way side on the trodden pathway Matthew 13:5 , Matthew 13:6 Some fell upon stony places or spots where the rock was near the surface Matthew 13:11 Carnal minds foolishly put a literal meaning upon expressions which are evidently figurative, and so discern not the meaning. To understand the gospel is a gift of divine grace. Matthew 13:12-15 Those who will not see may expect to fall into such a state that they cannot see. Matthew 13:23 Four bad soils are mentioned...

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for August 30

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for August 30 “Happy are ye if ye do them” (John 13:17) You little know the rest that comes from the yielded will, the surrendered choice, the abandoned world, the meek and lowly heart that lets the world go by, and knows that it shall inherit the earth which it has refused! You little know the relish that it gives to the blessing to hunger and thirst after righteousness, and to be filled with a satisfaction that worldly delight cannot afford, and then to rise to the higher blessedness of the merciful, the forgiving, the hearts that have learned that it is “more blessed to give than to receive,” and the lives that find that “letting go is twice possessing,” and blessing others is to be doubly blessed! Nay, there is yet one jewel brighter than all the rest in this crown of beatitudes. It is the tear-drop crystallized into the diamond, the blood-drop transfigured into the ruby of heaven’s eternal crown. It is the joy of suffering with Jesus, and th...

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for August 30

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for August 30 Tozer in the Morning Personal Commitment to Growth There comes a time when the true believer must take his stand on the oath and covenant of God and refuse to be shaken. He must lift high his happy affirmation, not in arrogance, but in faith and in deep humility. Perhaps his declaration of independence will go something like this: I am not yet perfect, but I thank God and my Lord Jesus Christ that I am done with the past and I do now trust in my Savior for full deliverance from all my sins. I cannot pray like Daniel, but I shall never cease to praise God that He inclines His ear to me. I am not as wise as Solomon, but I glory in this, that "I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day" (2 Timothy 1:12). I have not the gifts of Moses or Isaiah or John, but I'll be everlastingly grateful that I have been given the moral perception to understand a...

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 30th August 2025

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 30th August 2025 8/30 Galatians 6:1 1 Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. Each of us has numerous weaknesses that spring from our fallen nature. While some individuals are more prone to one over another, the temptations we experience are common to us all. When one of our brothers or sisters is caught up in one of those transgressions, they need the help of the more spiritually mature to restore him or her in a spirit of gentleness. Gentleness is an often overlooked fruit of the Spirit. Don't mistake it for timidity. It is a heart that longs to restore the person instead of driving them off. While it is firm at times, it is also understanding, compassionate, and patient, just as the Lord is with us. While helping the person get out of their particular vice, we should keep a careful watch on our own soul. How many pastor...

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for August 29

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for August 29 Tozer in the Morning Pursuing Truth One of the great religious thinkers of this century has pointed out a strange contradiction in the mental attitude of our times--our eager love of knowledge and our universal neglect of truth. That men love knowledge is too well demonstrated to need proof, if by knowledge we mean facts, know-how, statistics, technical information, scientific and mechanical skills. Our printing presses are constantly rolling out books crammed with useful information. Our schools are bulging with eager students bent on acquiring all possible knowledge in the shortest possible time. Among the most popular and lucrative radio programs on the air today are those designed to discover how many unrelated bits of information the participants possess. "Who? What? When? Where?" run the endless questions, and the impression is created that the one who can answer the greatest number is in some way a superior ...

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for August 29

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for August 29 “Plentiful Refreshment ” - Jeremiah 31:12 Oh, to have one’s soul under heavenly cultivation; no longer a wilderness but a garden of the LORD! Enclosed from the waste, walled around by grace, planted by instruction, visited by love, weeded by heavenly discipline, and guarded by divine power, one’s favored soul is prepared to yield fruit unto the LORD. But a garden may become parched for want of water, and then all its herbs decline and are ready to die. O my soul, how soon would this be the case were the LORD to leave thee! In the East, a garden without water soon ceases to be a garden at all: nothing can come to perfection, grow, or even live. When irrigation is kept up, the result is charming. Oh, to have one’s soul watered by the Holy Spirit uniformly -- every part of the garden having its own stream; plentifully -- a sufficient refreshment coming to every tree and herb, however thirsty by nature it ma...

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for August 29

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for August 29 Morning “The tree is known by its fruit.” Matthew 12:22-37 Matthew 12:22 It would seem that the devil had special licence to do his worst among men during the days of our Lord’s sojourn upon earth. Thus was he the more gloriously defeated by the Son of God in many pitched battles between the two champions. Matthew 12:23 They spoke honestly, but their leaders were prejudiced, and refused to see what was clear enough to the most ordinary understandings. It is a dreadful thing to be so warped by. education as to refuse to admit what is plain to all. Matthew 12:27-29 For some of the sons of the Pharisees pretended to be able to heal possessed persons. Matthew 12:30 Let this always be remembered, and let each one ask himself, “Am I with Christ?” If not, remember you are against him. Can you bear this? Matthew 12:31 , Matthew 12:32 A terrible doom which fell upon these Pharisees and destroyed them. How careful...

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for August 29

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for August 29 “To obey is better than sacrifice” (1 Samuel 15:22) Our healing is thus represented as a special recompense for obedience. If, therefore, we would please the Lord and have the reward of those who please Him, there is no service so acceptable to Him as our praise. Let us ever meet Him with a glad and thankful heart and He will reflect it back in the health of our countenance and the buoyant life and springing health, which is but the echo of a joyful heart. Further, thankfulness is the best preparation for faith. Trust grows spontaneously in the praiseful heart. Thankfulness takes the sunny side of the street and looks at the bright side of God, and it is only thus that we can ever trust Him. Unbelief looks at our troubles and, of course, they seem like mountains, and faith is discouraged by the prospect. A thankful disposition will always find some cause for cheer, and gloomy one will find a cloud in the brightest sky and a fly in t...

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 29th August 2025

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 29th August 2025 8/29 Galatians 5:25-26 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another. Keeping in step with the Spirit is our daily task. When our lives are expressing His fruits, we can know we are in step with Him (Galatians 5:22-23). As we grow in sanctification, we become sensitive to His warnings when we are out of step. We sense something is wrong. When we look to the Spirit to show us where we got out of step, He graciously shows us. Keeping in step with the Spirit is most evident in relations with others. Our family is our elementary training. The church is our high school, where the tests are more difficult. And the world is our college where we find out if we got the basics at home and church. But our final exam is marriage and children. Then we learn there are selfish areas of our life we overlooked in our prior education. We should be grat...

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for August 28

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for August 28 Tozer in the Morning Stumble Causers When we are first converted, especially if we come from a non-Christian background, we are likely to be almost too naive for our own good. The wondrous experience through which we have just passed, or perhaps I should say into which we have entered, has predisposed us to believe in everybody. Our trust in other Christians is likely to be boundless. That there could be hypocrites, double-minded professors, religious pretenders, carnal camp followers, never once enters our minds. The result is that our first encounter with a worldly church member comes as a frightful shock to our sensitive minds. Some never recover from this shattering of their confidence. They become religious cripples. Their growth is stunted and their usefulness destroyed, or at the least greatly hindered from that moment on. That I speak truly here may be proved by everyday experience; but there is a more sure word ...

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for August 28 “Out of Any Circumstance ” - Psalms 55:16 Yes, I must and will pray. What else can I do! What better can I do? Betrayed, forsaken, grieved, baffled, O my LORD, I will call upon Thee. My Ziklag is in ashes, and men speak of stoning me; but I encourage my heart in the LORD, who will bear me through this trial as He has borne me through so many others. Jehovah shall save me; I am sure He will, and I declare my faith. The LORD and no one else shall save me. I desire no other helper and would not trust in an arm of flesh even if I could. I will cry to Him evening, and morning, and noon, and I will cry to no one else, for He is all sufficient. How He will save me I cannot guess; but He will do it, I know. He will do it in the best and surest way, and He will do it in the largest, truest, and fullest sense. Out of this trouble and all future troubles the great I AM will bring me as surely as He lives; and when ...

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for August 28

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for August 28 Morning “All that the Father giveth Me shall come to Me.” Matthew 11:20-30 The remarkable portion of Scripture which we are about to read contains in a small space the three great truths of human responsibility, the sovereignty of electing love, and the free proclamation of the gospel. If we cannot reconcile them, we must, nevertheless, believe them, and wait for clearer light. Matthew 11:20 Therefore it is clear that they ought to have repented. Jesus would not have upbraided them for impenitence, if penitence were not their duty. Matthew 11:21 A very mysterious statement, since it involves the singular fact that the mighty works were not done among those who would have repented, and were done among those who refused to repent. The way of the Lord is far above the comprehension of men. Matthew 11:22 Though as to open sin the Sidonians were beyond measure vile, yet they were not so guilty as those who ha...

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for August 28

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for August 28 “According to the power that worketh in us” (Ephesians 3:20) When we reach the place of union with God, through the indwelling of the Holy Ghost, we come into the inheritance of external blessing and enter upon the land of our possession. Then our physical health and strength come to us through the power of our interior life; then the prayer is fulfilled, that we shall be in health and prosper, as our soul prospereth. Then, with the kingdom of God and His righteousness within us, all things are added unto us. God’s external working always keeps pace with the power that worketh in us. When God is enthroned in a human soul, then the devil and the world soon find it out. We do not need to advertise our power. Jesus could not be hid, and a soul filled with Divine power and purity should become the center of attraction to hungry hearts and suffering lives. Let us receive Him and recognize Him in His indwelling glory, and then will we app...

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 28th August 2025

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 28th August 2025 8/28 Galatians 5:9 9 A little leaven leavens the whole lump. One form of leaven is yeast. It is a fungus used to make bread rise. One only needs to add a little to a batch of dough because it multiplies so rapidly. Until recent times, people kept a small batch of leavened dough from their current batch so they could add yeast to the next batch in the future. The apostle Paul used leaven as an analogy to the false teaching that had infected the church of Galatia. Once one person accepted the idea that salvation was Jesus' sacrifice plus our works, even one act of obedience, then others felt as though they had missed something. "You'd better be sure you are bound for heaven, so you should (fill in the blank)." And soon the whole fellowship was trusting in works to save their soul. False teaching that promotes a trust in our deeds or elevates us above others because we do a thing a certain way feeds our pride. That is why...

Christian Quote of the Day - Christ, Our Great Physician

Christian Quote of the Day - Christ, Our Great Physician Christ is the most tender-hearted physician. He hath ended His passion but not His compassion. He is not more full of skill than sympathy, ‘He healed the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds’ (Psalm 147:3). Every groan of the patient goes to the heart of the physician. — Thomas Watson (1620-1686) https://christianquote.com

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for August 27

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for August 27 Tozer in the Morning LORD OF RIGHTEOUSNESS In the midst of all the confusions of our day, it is important that we find out that Jesus Christ is the Lord of all righteousness and the Lord of all wisdom. Righteousness is not a word easily acceptable to lost men and women in a lost world. Outside of the Word of God, there is no book or treatise that can give us a satisfying answer about righteousness, because the only One who is Lord of all righteousness is our Lord Jesus Christ, Himself. A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of His kingdom. He is the only One in all the universe who perfectly loved righteousness and hated iniquity. Our great High Priest and Mediator is the righteous and holy One-Jesus Christ, our risen Lord. He is not only righteous, He is the Lord of all righteousness! Then, there is His wisdom. The sum total of the deep and eternal wisdom of the ages lies in Jesus Christ as a treasure hidden away. Al...

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for August 27

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for August 27 “Choice Men ” - Isaiah 48:10 This has long been the motto fixed before our eye upon the wall of our bedroom, and in many ways it has also been written on our heart. It is no mean thing to be chosen of God. God’s choice makes chosen men choice men. Better to be the elect of God than the elect of a whole nation. So eminent is this privilege, that whatever drawback may be joined to it we very joyfully accept it, even as the Jew ate the bitter herbs for the sake of the Paschal Lamb. We choose the furnace, since God chooses us in it. We are chosen as an afflicted people and not as a prosperous people, chosen not in the palace but in the furnace. In the furnace beauty is marred, fashion is destroyed, strength is melted, glory is consumed, and yet here eternal love reveals its secrets and declares its choice. So has it been in our case. In times of severest trial God has made to us our calling and election plai...

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for August 27

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for August 27 Morning “The poor have the gospel preached unto them.” Matthew 11:2-19 Matthew 11:2 , Matthew 11:3 Had his sufferings depressed his spirit? We think not. He probably sent his disciples, that their faith might be confirmed. Matthew 11:4-6 These are the attesting proofs of the true Messiah’s mission, and among them all there is no greater wonder of grace than the preaching of the gospel to the poor. Other teachers had shut them out, but Jesus specially sought them out. Matthew 11:7 Was he a man easily moved, pliant and yielding? By no means. John was very far from being fickle or cowardly. Matthew 11:8-11 His was but a twilight dispensation, and we who live in the full blaze of day have greater privileges than he had. John had never heard the words, “It is finished,” as we have done, to our hearts joy. Matthew 11:12 There is no such thing as winning this kingdom by halfhearted endeavours. Energy is needed ...

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for August 27

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for August 27 “Take no thought for your life” (Matthew 6:25) Still the Lord is using the things that are despised. The very names of Nazarene and Christian were once epithets of contempt. No man can have God’s highest thought and be popular with his immediate generation. The most abused men are often most used. There are far greater calamities than to be unpopular and misunderstood. There are far worse things than to be found in the minority. Many of God’s greatest blessings are lying behind the devil’s scarecrows of prejudice and misrepresentation. The Holy Ghost is not ashamed to use unpopular people. And if He uses them, what need they care for men? Oh, let us but have His recognition and man’s notice will count for little, and He will give us all we need of human help and praise. Let us only seek His will, His glory, His approval. Let us go for Him on the hardest errands and do the most menial tasks. Honor enough that He uses us and sends us....

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 27th August 2025

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 27th August 2025 8/27 Galatians 5:6 6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love. One of God's covenants with Abraham included circumcision of his male descendants. It was an outward sign of an inward sensitivity to God's words. Some of the early Jewish Christians believed non-Jewish converts should be circumcised. Paul argued that they were saved by faith in what Christ did, not on what obedience to the Old Covenant does or doesn't do for us. Conversion is ceasing to trust in our own goodness and placing our faith in what Jesus did for us. No religious ritual or custom counts for anything with God. God isn't going to let you into heaven because you gave an offering every week. Religious obligations don't count for anything. Only faith working through love matters in the eternal realm. If you gave your offering at the prompting of the Holy Spirit and you respon...

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for August 26

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for August 26 Morning “Ye shall keep my Sabbaths.” Matthew 12:1-21 Matthew 12:1 Not from any idle feeling of passing away time, but because of necessity, the disciples took ears of corn to eat as they passed through the fields. This they were allowed to do by the Jewish law, and no one found fault with them for it, only it happened to be the Sabbath, and therefore the Pharisees renewed the old quarrel. Matthew 12:2 One would have thought that it was surely permissible to relieve hunger on the Sabbath; but the Pharisees made it out to be an act of harvesting, and even of threshing when they saw them rub the ears in their hands. Some men are great at making much ado about nothing. Matthew 12:3 , Matthew 12:4 Necessity has no law. It was never intended that men should die of hunger in order to preserve the sanctity of a day. Matthew 12:5 , Matthew 12:6 Works done for God are commendable on the Sabbath, and if the Lord hi...

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for August 26

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for August 26 “He of Tender Conscience ” - Ezekiel 34:22 Some are fat and flourishing, and therefore they are unkind to the feeble. This is a grievous sin and causes much sorrow. Those thrustings with side and with shoulder, those pushings of the diseased with the horn, are a sad means of offense in the assemblies of professing believers. The LORD takes note of these proud and unkind deeds, and He is greatly angered by them, for He loves the weak. Is the reader one of the despised? Is he a mourner in Zion and a marked man because of his tender conscience? Do his brethren judge him harshly? Let him not resent their conduct; above all let him not push and thrust in return. Let him leave the matter in the LORD’s hands. He is the Judge. Why should we wish to intrude upon His office? He will decide much more righteously than we can. His time for judgment is the best, and we need not be in a hurry to hasten it on. Let the h...

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for August 26

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for August 26 Tozer in the Morning Cleaning Out the Closets Another question to put to yourself is, "Do I have any habits I am ashamed to let anybody know I have? Have I any personal habits that I am ashamed of? Do I hide something when the pastor is coming? If everything were known in the church about how I lived, would I go back to church?" You can dodge this, twist it around and answer evasively, but the snow will lie on your heart. If you answer God honestly and go to work to get rid of it and clean it up, springtime will come for you. Then ask yourself, "Is my speech clean?" One of the most shocking things in the church is the dirty-mouthed Christian who always walks on the borderline. There is no place for borderline stories that embarass some people, and there is nothng about sex or the human body that is funny if your mind is clean. There was once a gathering of officers, and George Washington was present in th...
