Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for July 31

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for July 31 “We were troubled on every side” (2 Corinthians 7:5) Why should God have to lead us thus, and allow the pressure to be so hard and constant? Well, in the first place, it shows His all-sufficient strength and grace much better than if we were exempt from pressure and trial. “The treasure is in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.” It make us more conscious of our dependence upon Him. God is constantly trying to teach us our dependence, and to hold us absolutely in His hand and hanging upon His care. This was the place where Jesus Himself stood and where He wants us to stand, not with a self-constituted strength, but with a hand ever leaning upon His, and a trust that dare not take one step alone. It teaches us trust. There is no way of learning faith except by trial. It is God’s school of faith, and it is far better for us to learn to trust God than to enjoy life. The lesson of faith, once lea...

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for July 31

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for July 31 Morning “Turn again our captivity.” Psalms 85 About this time the seventy weeks of the prophet were complete, and the time had come for the return from captivity; the Lord therefore raised up Cyrus, and moved his heart to set his people free, and help them to go back to Jerusalem. Of this we have already learned in our last lesson, and therefore let us read those psalms in which the feelings of the returning exiles are set forth. Psalms 85:1 , Psalms 85:2 All goes well when sin is pardoned. This is the one fatal hindrance to prosperity; and, this removed, all is well. Psalms 85:3 , Psalms 85:4 When God turns to us in love, it is high time that we turned to him in faith and repentance; and, indeed, we very soon do so. Love is the great converting force: when the love of Jesus turns us, we are turned indeed. Psalms 85:5-10 This it is our privilege to see fulfilled in the atonement of the Lord Jesus, by which...

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for July 31

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for July 31 Tozer in the Morning Unseen Realities Let us not be shocked by the suggestion that there are disadvantages to the life in Christ. There most certainly are. Abel was murdered. Joseph was sold into slavery, Daniel was thrown into the den of lions, Stephen was stoned to death, Paul was beheaded, and a noble army of martyrs was put to death by various painful methods down the long centuries. And where the hostility did not lead to such violence (and mostly it did not and does not) the sons of this world nevertheless managed to make it tough for the children of God in a thousand cruel ways. Everyone who has lived for Christ in a Christless world has suffered some losses and endured some pains that he could have avoided by the simple expedient of laying down his cross. However, the pains are short and the losses inconsequential compared with the glory that will follow, "For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worke...

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for July 31

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for July 31 “An Appeal; Deliverance ” - Psalms 50:15 This is a promise indeed! Here is an urgent occasion -- "the day of trouble." It is dark at noon on such a day, and every hour seems blacker than the one which came before it. Then is this promise in season: it is written for the cloudy day. Here is condescending advice, "Call upon me." We ought not to need the exhortation: it should be our constant habit all the day and every day. What a mercy to have liberty to call upon God! What wisdom to make good use of it! How foolish to go running about to men! The LORD invites us to lay our case before Him, and surely we will not hesitate to do so. Here is reassuring encouragement: "I will deliver thee." Whatever the trouble may be, the LORD makes no exceptions but promises full, sure, happy deliverance. He will Himself work out our deliverance by His own hand. We believe it, and the LORD honor...

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 31st July 2025

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 31st July 2025 7/31 1 Corinthians 15:3 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures This verse begins a passage that is one of the earliest records of the beliefs of the early church. Biblical scholars believe it developed within three years of Jesus' crucifixion. Critics of the Bible have claimed that the beliefs of the church drastically changed over time. But this early account is what we still believe two thousand years later. It begins by saying that Jesus died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures. The early church saw Jesus' death for our sins as the fulfillment of prophecies. This passage goes on to say that Jesus was buried and raised on the third day according to prophecies. After Jesus' resurrection He appeared to Peter, the twelve disciples, James, and five hundred people at one time. Paul adds that Jesus also appeared to him. The ea...

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for July 30

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for July 30 “If thou wilt diligently hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God and wilt keep all His statutes” (Exodus 15:26) Sometimes people fail because they have not confidence in the Physician. The very first requirement of this Doctor is, that you trust Him, and trust Him implicitly, so implicitly that you go forward on His bare word, and act as if you had received His healing the moment you claimed His promise. But no one would expect to be healed by an earthly doctor as soon as they obeyed his directions. You must do what the Great Physician tells you, if you expect Him to make you whole. You cannot expect to be healed if you are living in sin, any more than you could expect the best physician to cure you while you lived in a malarial climate and inhaled poison with every breath. So you must get up into the pure air of trust and obedience before Christ can make you whole. And then, if you will trust Him, and attend to His directions, you...

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for July 30

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for July 30 “Promise of Future Meeting ” - John 16:22 Surely He will come a second time, and then, when He sees us and we see Him, there will be rejoicings indeed. Oh, for that joyous return! But this promise is being dainty fulfilled in another sense. Our gracious LORD has many "agains" in His dealings with us. He gave us pardon, and He sees us again and repeats the absolving word as fresh sins cause us grief. He has revealed to us our acceptance before God, and when our faith in that blessing grows a little dim, He comes to us again and again and says, "Peace be unto you," and our hearts are glad. Beloved, all our past mercies are tokens of future mercies. If Jesus has been with us, He will see us again. Look upon no former favor as a dead and buried thing, to be mourned over; but regard it as a seed sown, which will grow, and push its head up from the dust, and cry, "I will see you again....

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for July 30

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for July 30 Morning “Thou shalt tread upon the lion.” Daniel 6:4-24 Darius made Daniel the prime minister of his empire, and this excited the envy of those beneath him. Daniel 6:6 , Daniel 6:7 This would be highly flattering to the king, and it was cunningly framed to entrap him. It would sound so grandly that no prayer was made on earth by the space of one month, save that which was addressed to the great Darius. How often are men snared by their own pride! Daniel 6:8 , Daniel 6:9 Little dreaming what he had thereby done. It is wise to consider a long time before we set our hands to any writing, otherwise we may soon sign away the inheritance of our children. Daniel 6:10 He made no alteration, not even in the mode of his worship, lest there should be thought to be any wavering in him. To him life or death was not the question, but loyalty to his Lord was all in all. He would not bate one jot in his adherence to his G...

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for July 30

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for July 30 Tozer in the Morning The Cross is a Radical Thing The cross of Christ is the most revolutionary thing ever to appear among men. The cross of the Roman times knew no compromise; it never made concessions. It won all its arguments by killing its opponent and silencing him for good. It spared not Christ, by slew Him the same as the rest. He was alive when they hung Him on that cross and completely dead when they took him down six hours later. That was the cross the first time it appeared in Christian history. After Christ was risen from the dead the apostles went out to preach His message, and what they preached was the cross. And wherever they went into the wide world they carried the cross, and the same revolutionary power went with them. The radical message of the cross transformed Saul of Tarsus and changed him from a persecutor of Christians to a tender believer and an apostle of the faith. Its power changed bad men into...

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 30th July 2025

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 30th July 2025 7/30 1 Corinthians 14:27-28 27 If any speak in a tongue, let there be only two or at most three, and each in turn, and let someone interpret. 28 But if there is no one to interpret, let each of them keep silent in church and speak to himself and to God. For some strange reason, many churches today completely ignore or explain away this verse. The gift of tongues can become quite a divisive issue. If the church followed Paul's simple, inspired guideline, it would not be such a problem. Instead, you can walk into some churches today and hear a roar of almost everyone praying aloud in tongues. Paul clearly warns that this will sound like a group of foreigners to anyone who happens to attend. It doesn't build up the body of believers, which is the purpose of the gifts when we are together (1 Corinthians 14:4, 6-12). Notice how the word "if" begins our verse today. Tongues are not necessary to a worship service. But if there ...

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for July 29

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for July 29 “My helpers in Christ Jesus” (Romans 16:3) Christ’s Church is overrun with captains. She is in great need of a few more privates. A few rivers run into the sea, but a larger number run into other rivers. We cannot all be pioneers, but we can all be helpers, and no man is fitted to go in the front until he has learned well how to go second. A spirit of self-importance is fatal to all work for Christ. The biggest enemy of true spiritual power is spiritual self-consciousness. Joshua must die before Jericho can fall. God often has to test His chosen servants by putting them in a subordinate place before He can bring them to the front. Joseph must learn to serve in the kitchen and to suffer in prison before he can rise to the throne, and as soon as Joseph is ready for the throne, the throne is always waiting for Joseph. God has more places than accepted candidates. Let us not be afraid to go into the training class, and even take the lowes...

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for July 29

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for July 29 Morning “Everything shall live whither the river cometh.” Ezekiel 47:1-12 We will now read one of Ezekiel’s most interesting and instructive visions. Ezekiel 47:1 , Ezekiel 47:2 Here we see the river of the water of life, the divine outpouring of the Holy Spirit in gospel days. It rises at the sacrificial altar. Ezekiel 47:3-5 The power and influence of the life-giving gospel grows each day. The streams of Palestine frequently lessen as they run, but the river of grace becomes deeper and wider. The grain of mustard grows into a tree. The drops which oozed from beneath the altar deepened and widened into an impassable torrent. Ezekiel 47:6 , Ezekiel 47:7 Fertility is produced by grace, blessings spring up like fruitful trees wherever the gospel comes. Ezekiel 47:8 Almost within sight of Jerusalem lay the loathsome Dead Sea, which covered the ruins of the doomed cities of the plain, a sad memorial and type o...

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for July 29

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for July 29 Tozer in the Morning CHEAP RELIGION What passes for Christianity in our day is cheap religion! To listen to the current concepts of Christianity, we would conclude it is little more than bits of beautiful poetry, a man-made bouquet of fragrant flowers, a kindly smile for our neighbor and a couple of good deeds on behalf of a brother or sister. When I consider some of the elements now offered in Christianity as acceptable religion, I have to restrain myself lest I speak too disapprovingly. I fear my words would be so strong that I would have to repent of them! And I read in the Scriptures that there are some things God does not want us to say even about the devil. What do we find surfacing in much of our Christian fellowship? The complaint that God takes a long time to work out His will. We do not want to take the time to plow and cultivate. We want the fruit and the harvest right away. We do not want to be engaged in any s...

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for July 29

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for July 29 “He Routs Our Enemy ” - Zephaniah 3:15 What a casting out was that! Satan has lost his throne in our nature even as he lost his seat in heaven. Our LORD Jesus has destroyed the enemy’s reigning power over us. He may worry us, but he cannot claim us as his own. His bonds are no longer upon our spirits: the Son has made us free, and we are free indeed. Still is the archenemy the accuser of the brethren; but even from this position our LORD has driven him. Our Advocate silences our accuser. The LORD rebukes our enemies and pleads the causes of our soul, so that no harm comes of all the devil’s revilings. As a tempter, the evil spirit still assails us and insinuates himself into our minds; but thence also is he cast out as to his former preeminence. He wriggles about like a serpent, but he cannot rule like a sovereign. He hurls in blasphemous thoughts when he has opportunity; but what a relief it is when he is...

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 29th July 2025

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 29th July 2025 7/29 1 Corinthians 14:1 1 Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy. Love will remain when the gifts are no longer needed. That is why it should be our pursuit. To pursue agape love is to pursue God. This is not to say that the gifts of the Spirit are not helpful. We should desire one additional one above all others-that is the gift to prophesy. To prophesy is to speak forth the Word of God at His leading. It is to apply the truth of God to a particular group of people or to an individual at the time the person needs to hear it. A quick scan of the words of the prophets and you will see that very little of their message was of future events. Predicting the future is often the only definition we give to prophecy. While it is at times a function of that gift, the biblical emphasis of the gift is on delivering God's message to those who need to hear it. Prophecy can warn or comfort, convict o...

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for July 28

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for July 28 Tozer in the Morning WHO IS YOUR EXAMPLE? The Christian churches of our day have suffered a great loss in rejecting the example of good men, choosing instead the "celebrity of the hour" for their pattern. We must agree that it is altogether unlikely that we know who our "greatest" men are. One thing is sure, however-the greatest man alive today is the best man alive today. That is not open to debate. Spiritual virtues run deep and silent. The holy and humble man will not advertise himself nor allow others to do it for him. The Christian who is zealous to promote the cause of Christ can begin by living in the power of God's Spirit, and so reproducing the life of Christ in the sight of men. In deep humility and without ostentation he can let his light shine. To sum it all up: the most effective argument for Christianity is still the good lives of those who profess it! Tozer in the Evening Devotion to Thin...

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for July 28

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for July 28 “Bow Down; Be Lifted Up ” - 1 Peter 5:6 This is tantamount to a promise: if we will bow down, the LORD will lift us up. Humility leads to honor; submission is the way to exaltation. That same hand of God which presses us down is waiting to raise us up when we are prepared to bear the blessing. We stoop to conquer. Many cringe before men and yet miss the patronage they crave; but he that humbles himself under the hand of God shall not fail to be enriched, uplifted, sustained, and comforted by the ever-gracious One. It is a habit of Jehovah to cast down the proud and lift up the lowly. Yet there is a time for the LORD’s working. We ought now to humble ourselves, even at this present moment; and we are bound to keep on doing so whether the LORD lays His afflicting hand upon us or not. When the LORD smites, it is our special duty to accept the chastisement with profound submission. But as for the LORD’s exalta...

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for July 28

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for July 28 “Not my will, but Thine” (Luke 22:42) He who once suffered in Gethsemane will be our strength and our victory, too. We may fear, we may also sink, but let us not be dismayed, and we shall yet praise Him, and look back from a finished course, and say, “Not one word hath failed of all that the Lord hath spoken.” But in order to do this, we must, like Him, meet the conflict, not with a defiant, but with a submissive spirit. He had to say, “Not My will, but Thine be done”; but in saying it, He gained the very thing He surrendered. So the submission of Gethsemane is not a blind and dead submission of a heart that abandons all its hope; but it is the free submission that bows the head, in order to get double strength through the faith and prayer. We let go, in order that we may take a firmer hold. We give up, in order that we may more fully receive. We lay our Isaac on Mount Moriah, and we ask him back, no longer our Isaac, but God’s Isaac,...

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for July 28

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for July 28 Morning “I will raise up for them a plant of renown.” Ezekiel 34:11-31 Ezekiel continued to cheer the captivity of his brethren with comfortable words. After complaining of the unfaithful shepherds, who had scattered his people, the Lord promised to gather his chosen by his own hand. Ezekiel 34:11 , Ezekiel 34:12 Because they are his own people he will not suffer them to be lost. The Lord’s elect shall be gathered by efficacious grace and brought to Jesus. Ezekiel 34:13-15 Provision and rest are two great necessities. We have in Christ Jesus both of these blessings. Ezekiel 34:16 Proud, self-sufficient, and self-righteous persons have neither part nor lot in the covenant; for them judgment is reserved. Ezekiel 34:18 , Ezekiel 34:19 A hard, overbearing spirit towards weaker brethren always brings chastisement with it. Ezekiel 34:20-23 Who is this but Jesus, the true David, the gentle Shepherd who tenderly c...

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 28th July 2025

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 28th July 2025 7/28 1 Corinthians 13:13 13 So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love. The gifts of the Spirit that help to build up the body of Christ will one day no longer be needed. God's work in us will be completed. Have you heard this expression? "A hearse is never followed by a moving van." Not only will we leave behind all physical possessions, but we will leave our spiritual gifts as well. The good news is that we will take with us our faith, hope, and love. Our faith is our conviction based on the Word of God. It is also our expectation based on those convictions. We will continually see the fulfillment of that faith, or as the song says, "My faith will be my eyes." The same is true for our hope. Every godly hope will be realized throughout eternity! Greater still is love. The greatest love on earth is a dim shadow of the fullness of love we will experience in eternity. The old n...

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for July 27

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for July 27 Morning “Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us.” Daniel 3:1 , Daniel 3:3 , Daniel 3:7-9 , Daniel 3:12-28 , Daniel 3:30 Daniel 3:30 The unfaltering fidelity of the three holy children is worthy of our imitation. They never hesitated or parleyed with the tyrant. Fixed were their hearts in God, and confidently stayed on him; and so they conquered the proud monarch; yea, and vanquished death itself, quenching the violence of the flames. Rich was their reward. Jesus walked the glowing coals with them, and turned the furnace into a fair pavilion. In his name let us also abide by the truth without flinching, and no evil shall come nigh unto us. Never let us debate or question, but for God and his holy gospel let us be bold to sacrifice even life itself. May the sons of this family be such young men as Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego. Amen. Tempted and persecuted here, Afflicted and distress’d, With steadfa...

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for July 27

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for July 27 “More than Mere Words ” - Acts 13:34 Nothing of man is sure; but everything of God is so. Especially are covenant mercies sure mercies, even as David said "an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things and sure." We are sure that the Loci meant His mercy. He did not speak mere words: there is substance and truth in every one of His promises. His mercies are mercies indeed. Even if a promise seems as if it must drop through by reason of death, yet it never shall, for the good LORD will make good His word. We are sure that the LORD will bestow promised mercies on all His covenanted ones. They shall come in due course to all the chosen of the LORD. They are sure to all the seed, from the least of them unto the greatest of them. We are sure that the LORD will continue His mercies to His own people. He does not give and take. What He has granted us is the token of much more. That which we have not ye...

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for July 27

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for July 27 Tozer in the Morning The Last Chapter The four Gospels tell the story of the life and ministry of Jesus, and in so doing, they follow accurately the ordinary course of biography, giving the facts of His birth, growth, work, death and burial. That is the way with biography: the very word itself suggests it, for it comes from bios, life, and graphein, to write, and means the written history of a person's life. So says Noah Webster. Now, when we look at the Gospels we note an odd--and wonderful--thing. An extra chapter is added. Why? Biography, by its own definition, must confine itself to the record of the life of an individual. That part of the book which deals with the family tree is not biography, but history, and that part which follows the record of the subject's death is not biography either. It may be appraisal, or eulogy, or criticism, but not biography, for the reason that the "bios" is gone: the subje...

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for July 27

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for July 27 “The building up of the body of Christ” (Ephesians 4:13) God is preparing His heroes, and when the opportunity comes He can fit them into their place in a moment and the world will wonder where they came from. Let the Holy Ghost prepare you, dear friend, by all the discipline of life; and when the last finishing touch has been given to the marble, it will be easy for God to put it on the pedestal, and fit it into its niche. There is a day coming, when, like Othniel, we, too, shall judge the nations, and rule and reign with Christ on the millennial earth; but ere that glorious day can be, we must let God prepare us as He did Othniel at Kirjethsepher, amid the trials of our present life, and in the little victories, the significance of which, perhaps, we little dream. At least, let us be sure of this, that if the Holy Ghost has got an Othniel ready, the Lord of heaven and earth has a throne prepared for him. Is it for me to be used by H...

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 27th July 2025

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 27th July 2025 7/27 1 Corinthians 13:8 8 Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. Agape love, the love of God, will never pass away. If that love is in us, we will not stop loving someone and we won't give up on them. Spouses need God's love for one another. We need it for family members. We need this godly love for those to whom we are witnessing. Most of all, we need to have this love toward God. It is a love that values another for their intrinsic value without expecting anything in return. By contrast, the gifts of God's Spirit will cease when we are in heaven. There will be no need for prophecy. Everyone will know the Word. There will be no need for tongues, either to commune with God in prayer or to witness. We will be speaking with Jesus face to face. Knowledge in this case is the supernatural insight into a person's situation, such as that knowl...

Hebrews 12:1-2 Complete Jewish Bible 12 So then, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us, too, put aside every impediment — that is, the sin which easily hampers our forward movement — and keep running with endurance in the contest set before us, 2 looking away to the Initiator and Completer of that trusting,[a] Yeshua — who, in exchange for obtaining the joy set before him, endured execution on a stake as a criminal, scorning the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. https://biblegateway.com

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for July 26

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for July 26 Tozer in the Morning Footprints in Song One of the serious weaknesses of present-day evangelicalism is the mechanical quality of its thinking. A utilitarian Christ has taken the place of the radiant Savior of other and happier times. This Christ is able to save, it is true, but He is thought to do so in a practical across-the-counter manner, paying our debt and tearing off the receipt like a court clerk acknowledging a paid-up fine. A bank-teller psychology characterizes much of the religious thinking in our little gospel circle. The tragedy of it is that it is truth without being all the truth. If modern Christians are to approach the spiritual greatness of Bible saints or know the inward delights of the saints of post-biblical times, they must correct this imperfect view and cultivate the beauties of the Lord our God in sweet, personal experience. In achieving such a happy state, a good hymnbook will help more than any o...

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for July 26

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for July 26 “A Change of Name ” - Hosea 2:16-17 That day has come. We view our God no more as Baal, our tyrant LORD and mighty master, for we are not under law but under grace. We now think of Jehovah, our God, as our Ishi, our beloved husband, our LORD in love, our next-of-kin in bonds of sacred relationship. We do not serve Him less obediently, but we serve Him for a higher and more endearing reason. We no longer tremble under His lash but rejoice in His love. The slave is changed into a child and the task into a pleasure. Is it so with thee, dear reader? Has grace cast out slavish fear and implanted filial love? How happy are we in such an experience! Now we call the LORD’s day a delight, and worship is never a weariness. Prayer is now a privilege, and praise is a holiday. To obey is heaven; to give to the cause of God is a banquet. Thus have all things become new. Our mouth is filled with singing and our heart wit...

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for July 26

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for July 26 Morning “The Almighty shall be thy defence.” Jeremiah 34:1 , Jeremiah 34:4-18 Jeremiah 34:1 In a very short time they forced their way through the outer wall, and began to assail the inner fortifications. Jeremiah 34:5 The feeble-minded and vicious monarch had now before him conclusive evidence of the truthfulness of Jere- miah, and no doubt his anguish was great as he remembered how many warnings he had despised. Jeremiah 34:6 To see his babes slain, and his friends put to death by hundreds, must have been worse than death, especially to so timid a man as Zedekiah. Jeremiah 34:7 He had shut his eyes to the light, and now God for ever shuts him up in darkness; he had chosen the bondage of sin, and now he must wear the chains of misery. God has effectual ways of punishing rebels. Jeremiah 34:8-12 The mighty monarch cared kindly for the poor prophet. No doubt he had heard who he was, and how he had counselle...

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for July 26

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for July 26 “Now mine eye seeth Thee” (Job 42:5) We must recognize the true character of our self-life and its real virulence and vileness. We must consent to its destruction, and we must take it ourselves, as Abraham did Isaac, and lay it at the feet of God in willing sacrifice. This is a hard work for the natural heart, but the moment the will is yielded and the choice is made, that death is past, the agony is over, and we are astonished to find that the death is accomplished. Usually the crisis of life in such cases hangs upon a single point. God does not need to strike us in a hundred places to inflict a death wound. There is one point that touches the heart, and that is the point God usually strikes, the dearest thing in our life, the decisive thing in our plans, the citadel of the will, the center of the heart, and when we yield there, there is little left to yield anywhere else, and when we refuse to yield at this point, a spirit of evasio...

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 26th July 2026

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 26th July 2026 7/26 1 Corinthians 13:4-5 4 Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant 5 or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful. The previous chapter was an exhortation on the gifts of the Spirit. The diversity of gifts is important for a well-equipped church. Paul ends the chapter by telling us that he will show us a more excellent way (1 Corinthians 12:31b). That way is the way of love. Gifts are helpful. Love is essential. Without love, which is the first fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22), we can accomplish nothing of real value (1 Corinthians 13:2-3). It was love that brought Jesus to live among us. It was love that testified to the truth throughout His life. It was love that took Him to the cross to pay our sin debt. It is love that calls those who trust in Him His bride. And it is love that patiently speaks to our hearts, helping us to grow spiritually day by day. How do we...

Worthy Brief - July 25, 2025

Worthy Brief - July 25, 2025 The zeal of the Lord! Isaiah 9:6-7 For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.  Hebrews 4:9-10  There remains therefore a rest for the people of God.  10 For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His. The majestic Messianic prophecy of Isaiah 9 culminates in a powerful declaration: “The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.” Not might. Not maybe. Not if we work hard enough. It will be done -- because God Himself is passionate to see it through. The Hebrew word for “zeal” here is קִנְ...

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for July 25

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for July 25 “Nothing to Alarm Us ” - Daniel 12:13 We cannot understand all the prophecies, but yet we regard them with pleasure and not with dismay. There can be nothing in the Father’s decree which should justly alarm His child. Though the abomination of desolation be set up, yet the true believer shall not be defiled; rather shall he be purified, and made white, and tried. Though the earth be burned up, no smell of fire shall come upon the chosen. Amid the crash of matter and the wreck of worlds, the LORD Jehovah will preserve His own. Calmly resolute in duty, brave in conflict, patient in suffering, let us go our way, keeping to our road, and neither swerving from it nor loitering in it. The end will come; let us go our way till it does. Rest will be ours, All other things swing to and fro, but our foundation standeth sure. God rests in His love, and, therefore, we rest in it. Our peace is, and ever shall be, like ...

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for July 25

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for July 25 “He that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God” (Romans 14:18) God can only use us while we are right. Satan cared far less for Peter’s denial of his Master than for the use he made of it afterwards to destroy his faith. So Jesus said to him: “I have prayed for thee that thy faith fail not.” It was Peter’s faith he attacked, and so it is our faith that Satan contests. “The trial of our faith is much more precious than gold that perisheth.” Whatever else we let go let us hold steadfastly to our trust. “Cast not away, therefore, your confidence,” and “hold fast the rejoicing of our hope firm unto the end.” And if you would hold your trust, hold your sweetness, your rightness of spirit, your obedience to Christ, your victory in every way. Whatever comes, regard it as of less consequence, than that you should triumph and stand fast, and accepting every circumstance as God is pleased to let occur, wave the banner of your vict...
