The Greatness of God
Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing.1
If you ask a group of people what God is like, you are likely to get different answers. Most of the time, the answers reveal more about those speaking than about God. In fact, the truth about God might surprise you.
When the Heavenly Father reveals Himself in the Bible, He identifies Himself as a person. In each reference, he has a name (Jehovah, Elohim, Lord) or is referred to by the masculine pronoun (He). God has all the attributes of personality: intelligence to reason, emotions to feel, and the will to make decisions.
The Bible also shows God's immutability. Neither the nature nor the character of the Lord changes. He is always Spirit and His love remains constant. We can expect all God's principles to be true and for Him to act as He has promised. Delight, anger, and other feelings are not new traits, but part of His being, and His emotions are always appropriate.
God is eternal. He has no beginning and no end (Psalm 90:2), and is the same yesterday, today, and forever. No one created Him. That's hard for humans to understand, as His ways sometimes are as well (Romans 11:33). Let us be thankful that our God is far greater than we are capable of comprehending!
Suggested Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank You that I don't have to understand Your greatness to accept it. My mind is limited and sometimes I just raise my hands and praise you simply for who you are. Thank You, Beloved Father, for Your unconditional love for humanity. Let me be a small reflection of Your great love for others. I pray in Jesus' name, Amen.
1. Isaiah 40:26 (NIV).
