True Vine Devotional for January 17

True Vine Devotional for January 17 “ Herein is My Father Glorified, that Ye Bear Much Fruit ” - John 15:8 How can we glorify God? Not by adding to His glory or bringing Him any new glory that He has not. But simply by allowing His glory to shine out through us, by yielding ourselves to Him, that His glory may manifest itself in us and through us to the world. In a vineyard or a vine bearing much fruit, the owner is glorified, as it tells of his skill and care. In the disciple who bears much fruit, the Father is glorified. Before men and angels, proof is given of the glory of God’s grace and power; God’s glory shines out through him. This is what Peter means when he writes: “He that ministers, let him minister as of the ability that God giveth, that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ.” As a man works and serves in a power which comes from God alone, God gets all the glory. When we confess that the ability came from God alone, he that does the work, and they wh...

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for January 17

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for January 17 “A Man Without Fear ” - Joel 12:32 Of course, if the LORD sent Moses on an errand, He would not let him go alone. The tremendous risk which it would involve and the great power it would require would render it ridiculous for God to send a poor lone Hebrew to confront the mightiest king in all the world and then leave him to himself. It could not be imagined that a wise God would match poor Moses with Pharaoh and the enormous forces of Egypt. Hence He says, "Certainly I will be with thee," as if it were out of the question that He would send him alone. In my case, also, the same rule will hold good. If I go upon the LORD’s errand with a simple reliance upon His power and a single eye to His glory, it is certain that He will be with me. His sending me binds Him to back me up. Is not this enough? What more can I want? If all the angels and arch- angels were with me. I might fail; but if He is wit...

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for January 17

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for January 17 Morning “Not as I will, but as Thou wilt.” Genesis 22:1-19 Genesis 22:1 This was at once the patriarch’s crowning trial and grandest victory, and it came after he had obtained the choicest blessing of his life. Great privileges involve great trial. Genesis 22:3 His obedience was speedy, unhesitating, and complete. Think of that early hour, and the task of cleaving the wood for such a sacrifice. Could we thus obey the Lord? Genesis 22:4 Those days of deliberation must have severely tried him. We can do in a hurry what we should shrink from if we weighed it calmly. Genesis 22:5 Perhaps he feared lest the servants should interpose to prevent his obedient act. Genesis 22:6-7 A touching question, but Abraham would not allow his feelings to master his faith. Genesis 22:8 These were grandly prophetic words, and have been divinely fulfilled; Genesis 22:14 Jehovah-jireh or the Lord will provide Genesis 22:18 Thu...

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for January 17

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for January 17 “It is God which worketh in you” (Philippians 2:13) God has not two ways for any of us; but one; not two things for us to do which we may choose between; but one best and highest choice. It is a blessed thing to find and fill the perfect will of God. It is a blessed thing to have our life laid out and our Christian work adjusted to God’s plan. Much strength is lost by working at a venture. Much spiritual force is expended in wasted effort, and scattered, indefinite and inconstant attempts at doing good. There is spiritual force and financial strength enough in the hands and hearts of the consecrated Christians of to-day to bring the coming of Christ, to bring about the evangelization of the world in a generation, if it were only wisely directed and utilized according to God’s plan. Christ has laid down a definite plan of work for His Church, and He expects us to understand it, and to work up to it; and as we catch His thought, and ...

Streams in the Desert Devotional for January 17

Streams in the Desert Devotional for January 17 "O Daniel, servant of the living God, is thy God whom thou servest continually, able to deliver thee" (Daniel 6:20). How many times we find this expression in the Scriptures, and yet it is just this very thing that we are so prone to lose sight of. We know it is written "the living God"; but in our daily life there is scarcely anything we practically so much lose sight of as the fact that God is the living God; that He is now whatever He was three or four thousand years since; that He has the same sovereign power, the same saving love towards those who love and serve Him as ever He had and that He will do for them now what He did for others two, three, four thousand years ago, simply because He is the living God, the unchanging One. Oh, how therefore we should confide in Him, and in our darkest moments never lose sight of the fact that He is still and ever will be the living God! Be assured, if you walk with Him and l...

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for January 17

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for January 17 Tozer in the Morning REJOICE-OR GRUMBLE I think all of us meet Christian men and women who always seem to look on the gloomy side and are never able to do anything with life's problems but grumble about them! I meet them often and when I do, I wonder: "Can these people be reading and trusting the same Bible I have been reading?" The Apostle Peter wrote to the tempted, suffering and persecuted believers in his day and noted with thanksgiving that they could rejoice because they counted God's promises and provisions greater than their trials! We do live in a sinful and imperfect world, and as believers in Christ we acknowledge that perfection is a relative thing now-and God has not really completed a thing with us, as yet! Peter testified that the persecuted and suffering Christians of his day were looking, in faith, to a future state of things immeasurably better than that which they knew, and that state of...
