Being Trustworthy

“Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.”1

A young lady was soaking up the sun's rays on a Florida beach when a little boy in his swimming trunks, carrying a towel, came up to her and asked her, "Do you believe in God?" She was surprised by the question, but she replied, "Why, yes, I do." Then he asked her: "Do you go to church every Sunday?" Again, her answer was "Yes!"
He then asked: "Do you read your Bible and pray every day?" Again, she said, "Yes!" By now her curiosity was very much aroused. The little boy sighed with relief and said, "Will you hold my quarter while I go in swimming?"

This story may make us giggle, but it is a simple illustration of an important responsibility we have as people, and more importantly, as Christians. Trustworthiness is something that our present society lacks. It would seem that many people, in general, are just out seeking their own benefit. It almost comes as a pleasant surprise when you find a person or business who is truly trustworthy!

As Christians, however, it is important to remember that there is much work to be done for God’s Kingdom. He is looking for dependable individuals to entrust this work to, but if we show that we cannot be trusted with the little everyday tasks we encounter, how can he use us to do greater things? This is especially true when it comes to our relationships with others. If we cannot be a safe, non-judgmental place for others to come and share their struggles and joys, we miss out on the opportunity to be “as Jesus” to them. Instead of being an inviting connection to a personal relationship with Jesus, our lack of trustworthiness may push others away from knowing the only One who can make them whole.

Whatever it is that comes our way today, let others know we are Christians by our kindness and trustworthiness. In the small tasks or large ones, may all that we do bring glory to God.

Suggested prayer: Dear God, I want to follow your example of honesty, love, and truth in everything I do. Help me work for the benefit of others, and not only my own. Allow my life to be a bridge that connects others to you, so that they can experience the hope, peace, and joy that comes from a personal friendship with you. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. In Jesus’ name, amen.
