True Vine Devotional for November 30

True Vine Devotional for November 30 “ I Chose You, and Appointed You, That Ye Should Go and Bear Fruit, and That Your Fruit Should Abide ” - John 15:16 There are some fruits that will not keep. One sort of pears or apples must be used at once; another sort can be kept over till next year. So there is in Christian work some fruit that does not last. There may be much that pleases and edified, and yet there is no permanent impression made on the power of the world or the state of the Church. On the other hand, there is work that leaves its mark for generations or for eternity. In it the power of God makes itself lastingly felt. It is the fruit of which Paul speaks when he describes the two styles of ministry: “My preaching was not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstrations of the Spirit and of power; that your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.” The more of man with his wisdom and power, the less of stability; the more of God’s Spirit, t...

Streams in the Desert Devotional for November 30

Streams in the Desert Devotional for November 30 "And seekest thou great things for thyself? Seek them not: for, behold, I will bring evil upon all flesh, saith the Lord: but thy life will I give unto thee for a prey in all places whither thou goest" (Jeremiah 45:5). A promise given for hard places, and a promise of safety and life in the midst of tremendous pressure, a life "for a prey." It may well adjust itself to our own times, which are growing harder as we near the end of the age, and the Tribulation times. What is the meaning of "a life for a prey"? It means a life snatched out of the jaws of the destroyer, as David snatched the lamb from the lion. It means not removal from the noise of the battle and the presence of our foes; but it means a table in the midst of our enemies, a shelter from the storm, a fortress amid the foe, a life preserved in the face of continual pressure: Paul’s healing when pressed out of measure so that he despaired of life;...

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for November 30

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for November 30 Tozer in the Morning Worldly Pollution What, then, is that world against which we are warned by the apostles? That world whose friendship constitutes spiritual adultery, the love of which stands in opposition to the love of God? It is the familiar world of sinful human society which swells about and beneath us as the waters of the flood once surged and churned around the ark of Noah. No Christian need fail to recognize it, provided he wants to know what it is and where it is located. Here are a few infallible marks of identification: 1. Unbelief. Wherever men refuse to come under the authority of the inspired Scriptures, there is the world. Religion without the Son of God is worldly religion. To have fellowship with those who live in unbelief is to love the world. The Christian's communion should be with Christians. 2. Impenitence. The people of the world will readily admit that they are sinners, but their lack of sorr...

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for November 30

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for November 30 “In lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves” (Philippians 2:3) When the apostle speaks of “the deep things of God,” he means more than deep spiritual truth. There must be something before this. There must be a deep soil and a thorough foundation. Very much of our spiritual teaching fails, because the people to whom we give it are so shallow. Their deeper nature has never been stirred. The beatitudes begin at the bottom of things, the poor in spirit, the mourners, and the hungry hearts. Suffering is essential to profound spiritual life. We need not go to a monastery or a leper hospital to find it. The first real opportunity for unselfishness will bring into your life the anguish of crucifixion, unless you are born of some different race from Adam’s. It is because men and women have not faced this that they know so little of suffering and death. We must have deep convictions. Truth must be to us a necessity, a...

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for November 30

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for November 30 Morning “Put on the whole armour of God.” Ephesians 6:11-24 We are about to read a peculiarly beautiful passage, in which the apostle represents the believer as a soldier, and urges hint to prepare for the battle by taking to himself all defensive and offensive arms. Ephesians 6:11 Satan will assail every part of us, and therefore we need to be protected from head to foot, like the knights of old. Ephesians 6:12 , Ephesians 6:13 If we fought with men we might be less guarded; wrestling as we do with subtle and spiritual adversaries, whose weapons are as mysterious as they are deadly, it becomes us to be doubly watchful lest in some unguarded point we receive wounds which will bleed for years. Ephesians 6:14 A girdle of sincerity keeps the whole man in marching order, and braces him up to meet the father of lies. An insincere man is a loose man, and a loose man is a lost man, Ephesians 6:14 This will gu...

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for November 30

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for November 30 “God Is in the Front Line ” - Deuteronomy 31:8 In the presence of a great work or a great warfare, here is a text which should help us to buckle on our harness. If Jehovah Himself goes before us, it must be safe to follow. Who can obstruct our progress if the LORD Himself is in the van? Come, brother soldiers, let us make a prompt advance! Why do we hesitate to pass on to victory? Nor is the LORD before us only; He is with us. Above, beneath, around, within is the omnipotent, omnipresent One. In all time, even to eternity, He will be with us even as He has been. How this should nerve our arm! Dash at it boldly, ye soldiers of the cross, for the LORD of hosts is with us! Being before us and with us, He will never withdraw His help. He cannot fail in Himself, and He will not fail toward us. He will continue to help us according to our need, even to the end. As He cannot fail us, so He will not forsake us...

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 30th November 2024

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 30th November 2024 11/30 Matthew 12:31 1 Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. Jesus healed a man who was blind and mute. The people were asking one another if this might mean Jesus is the Son of David. That was a title of the Messiah they were expecting to come. The Pharisees answered that Jesus was casting out demons by the prince of demons. Jesus said that it was by the Spirit of God that He had performed the miracle and then spoke our verse for today. There are many different interpretations for just what this means. The context is essential for understanding the expression. The Pharisees were attributing a work of the Holy Spirit to the demonic realm. The Spirit of God was revealing that Jesus is the Messiah by the liberation of the demon-possessed man. The Pharisees were telling the people the miracle was really an expression of evil. Not only were they call...

Worthy Brief - November 29, 2024

Worthy Brief - November 29, 2024 Take heed to how you hear! Mark 4:23-25  If any man has ears to hear, let him hear. 24  And He said to them, Take heed what you hear. With that measure which you measure, it shall be measured to you. And to you who hear, more shall be given. 25  For he who has, more shall be given to him; and he who has not, from him shall be taken even that which he has. The Shema is recited every Shabbat in Israel and throughout the world: "Hear, O Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is One." The emphasis is on hearing—not just with our ears but our hearts. That same emphasis runs through the Gospels, where Yeshua (Jesus) repeatedly says, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear." This isn’t just a phrase -- it’s a life-changing command. In Mark 4:23-25, Yeshua challenges us to heed how we hear. He's teaching that how we listen to His voice determines how much we receive from Him. When we truly hear what the Spirit is saying, not just with our...

Today's Daily Encounter Friday, November 29, 2024 How to Overflow with Thankfulness “And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.”1 Gratitude is not an inborn trait that automatically flows from us, instead it is something that grows through practice. Our human flaws and limited understanding of things can many times get in the way of us developing a grateful heart. So, how then, can we become people that overflow with thankfulness in this broken world? Today’s scripture gives us the answer to this question… it all comes back to our relationship with Jesus. When we accept Christ, the excitement of our “First Love” is evident and we can’t wait to talk about it. But as time goes on, the worries and stress of life tend to take place of that excitement, which shifts ou...

True Vine Devotional for November 29

True Vine Devotional for November 29 “ Ye Did Not Choose Me, But I Chose You, and Appointed You That Ye Should Go and Bear Fruit ” - John 15:16 The branch does not choose the vine, or decide on which vine it will grow. The vine brings forth the branch, as and where it will. Even so Christ says: “Ye did not choose me, but I chose you.” But some will say is not just this the difference between the branch in the natural and in the spiritual world, that man has a will and a power of choosing, and that it is in virtue of his having decided to accept Christ, his having chosen Him as Lord, that he is now a branch? This is undoubtedly true. And yet it is only half a truth. The lesson of the Vine, and the teaching of our Lord, points to the other half, the deeper, the divine side of our being in Christ. If He had not chosen us, we had never chosen Him. Our choosing Him was the result of His choosing us, and taking hold of us. In the very nature of things, it is His prerogative as Vine to c...

Streams in the Desert Devotional for November 29

Streams in the Desert Devotional for November 29 "Nevertheless afterward" (Hebrews 12:11). There is a legend that tells of a German baron who, at his castle on the Rhine, stretched wires from tower to tower, that the winds might convert them into an Aeolian harp. And the soft breezes played about the castle, but no music was born. But one night there arose a great tempest, and hill and castle were smitten by the fury of the mighty winds. The baron went to the threshold to look out upon the terror of the storm, and the Aeolian harp was filling the air with strains that rang out even above the clamor of the tempest. It needed the tempest to bring out the music! And have we not known men whose lives have not given out any entrancing music in the day of a calm prosperity, but who, when the tempest drove against them have astonished their fellows by the power and strength of their music? "Rain, rain Beating against the pane! How endlessly it pours Out of doors From the black...

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for November 29

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for November 29 Tozer in the Morning Prayer is No Substitute for Obedience Granted that the man who seeks revival has stopped thinking in plurals and has narrowed his faith down to one single individual, himself, what then? How can he find that after which his soul is yearning? How can he cooperate with his hungers to the end that he may indeed be filled? He must rid his mind of the false notion that prayer alone will bring the blessing. Normally all transactions between the soul and God are carried on by prayer. It is right and scriptural and according to the testimony of all the saints that any spiritual advance on any front, any deliverance, any purification, any enduement of power, comes by the prayer of faith. Our error is that we try to secure these benefits by prayer alone. The correction of this error is extremely difficult for it entails more than a mere adjustment of our doctrinal beliefs; it strikes at the whole Adam-life a...

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for November 29

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for November 29 “Could ye not watch with Me one hour?” (Matthew 26:40) A young lady whose parents had died while she was an infant, had been kindly cared for by a dear friend of the family. Before she was old enough to know him, he went to Europe. Regularly he wrote to her through all his years of absence, and never failed to send her money for all her wants. Finally word came that during a certain week he would return and visit her. He did not fix the day or the hour. She received several invitations to take pleasant trips with her friends during that week. One of these was of so pleasant a nature that she could not resist accepting it. During her trip, he came, inquired as to her absence, and left. Returning she found this note: “My life has been a struggle for you, might you not have waited one week for me?” More she never heard, and her life of plenty became one of want. Jesus has not fixed the day or hour of His return, but He has said, “Wat...

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for November 29

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for November 29 Morning “Walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called.” Ephesians 4:1-8 , Ephesians 4:11-32 So far from being ashamed of being shut up in a dungeon like a felon, Paul again repeats, as his choice title of honour, the words, “the prisoner of the Lord.” It is inexpressibly delightful to be allowed to suffer for him who suffered to the death for us. Paul uses his afflicted condition as an affectionate plea with the Ephesians to give heed to his counsel. Ephesians 4:1-6 True believers are one; Christ has only instituted one church, he has quickened it with but one Spirit, and set before it one sole hope. The Lord is the alone Head of the church, she has not two Lords, neither has Jesus revealed more than one faith, or commanded any other than one baptism: hence believers should anxiously maintain unity, and endeavour each one to promote the good of the whole. Ephesians 4:11-13 All the ascension-gift...

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for November 29

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for November 29 “Know How to Wait ” - Isaiah 28:16 He shall make haste to keep the LORD’s commandments; but he shall not make haste in any impatient or improper sense. He shall not haste to run away, for he shall not be overcome with the fear which causes panic. When others are flying hither and thither as if their wits had failed them, the believer shall be quiet, calm, and deliberate, and so shall be able to act wisely in the hour of trial. He shall not haste in his expectations, craving his good things at once and on the spot, but he will wait God’s time. Some are in a desperate hurry to have the bird in the hand, for they regard the LORD’s promise as a bird in the bush, not likely to be theirs. Believers know how to wait. He shall not haste by plunging into wrong or questionable action. Unbelief must be doing something, and thus it works its own undoing; but faith makes no more haste than good speed, and thus it i...

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 29th November 2024 11/29 Matthew 12:7 7 And if you had known what this means, 'I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,' you would not have condemned the guiltless. The religious leaders were watching Jesus and his disciples to try to find reason to accuse them of violating God's law. One Sabbath, Jesus' disciples passed by a wheat field and plucked some of the grain heads to eat. When the Pharisees saw this, they accused them of breaking the Sabbath. The Pharisees would have seen it as harvesting and winnowing the grain. They were being that petty in their interpretation of the law. Jesus' disciples were hungry. The law allowed a traveler to take from another's field just enough for himself to eat. That wasn't the problem. It was what the Pharisees saw as work on the Sabbath that was the issue. Jesus reminded them that King David violated a more serious law by eating the sacred Temple bread and giving it to his hungry men (1Samuel...

Worthy Brief - November 28, 2024

Worthy Brief - November 28, 2024 qhappy thanksgiving! Psalms 100:1-5  A Psalm of Thanksgiving. Make a joyful shout to the LORD, all you lands! 2  Serve the LORD with gladness; Come before His presence with singing. 3  Know that the LORD, He is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture. 4  Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name. 5  For the LORD is good; His mercy is everlasting, And His truth endures to all generations. Many families across the U.S. are gathering today to celebrate “Thanksgiving.” But let’s take a moment to turn our hearts to the ultimate source of thanksgiving: God Himself. Psalm 100 is often called the "Psalm of Thanksgiving," and it’s a perfect guide for how we should approach God—not just during Thanksgiving but every day. Most people overlook the "Psalm of Thanksgiving" as just an introductory comment, but ...

Today's Daily Encounter Thursday, November 28, 2024 Thanksgiving: A Choice “But when Daniel learned that the law had been signed, he went home and knelt down as usual in his upstairs room, with its windows open toward Jerusalem. He prayed three times a day, just as he had always done, giving thanks to his God.”1 The story of Daniel is one that we are more than likely familiar with. From the moment he was taken captive by Nebuchadnezzar as an adolescent boy, Daniel was a perfect example of faithfulness, trust, and obedience to God. The Bible usually tells us the good and bad about important biblical figures… for example, Abraham agreed to have a son with Hagar trying to “help” God with his promise, David committed adultery and murder, and Moses was not able to enter Canaan because he struck the rock, but we have nothing on Daniel. In fact, when the administrators and high officers searched to find some fault in him, they found nothing which is why they convinced the king to make it ...

True Vine Devotional for November 28 “ No Longer Do I Call You Servants; for the Servant Knoweth Not What His Lord Doeth: But I Have Called You Friends; for All Things That I Heard From My Father, I Have Made Known Unto ” - John 15:15 The highest proof of true friendship, and one great source of its blessedness, is the intimacy that holds nothing back, and admits the friend to share our inmost secrets. It is a blessed thing to be Christ’s servant; His redeemed ones delight to call themselves His slaves. Christ had often spoken of the disciples as His servants. In His great love our Lord now says: “No longer do I call you servants”; with the coming of the Holy Spirit a new era was to be inaugurated. “The servant knoweth not what his Lord doeth”—he has to obey without being consulted or admitted into the secret of all his master’s plans. “But, I have called you friends, for all things I heard from my Father I have made known unto you.” Christ’s friends share with Him in all the secr...

Streams in the Desert Devotional for November 28 "Thou makest the outgoings of the morning and evening to rejoice." (Psalms 65:8) Get up early and go to the mountain and watch God make a morning. The dull gray will give way as God pushes the sun towards the horizon, and there will be tints and hues of every shade, that will blend into one perfect light as the full-orbed sun bursts into view. As the King of day moves forth majestically, flooding the earth and every lowly vale, listen to the music of heaven’s choir as it sings of the majesty of the morning. In the holy hush of the early dawn I hear a Voice -- "I am with you all the day, Rejoice! Rejoice!" The clear pure light of the morning made me long for the truth in my heart, which alone would make me pure and clear as the morning, tune me up to the concert-pitch of the nature around me. And the wind that blew from the sunrise made the hope in the God who had first breathed into my nostrils the breath of life; th...

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for November 28

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for November 28 “Without Me ye can do nothing” (John 15:5) How much can I do for Christ? We are accustomed to say.—As much as I can. Have we ever thought we can do more than we can? This thought was lately suggested by the remarks of a Christian friend, who told how God had laid it upon her heart to do something for His cause which was beyond her power, and when she dared to obey Him, He gave her the assurance of His power and resources, and so marvelously met her faith that she was enabled to do more than she could otherwise, and accomplish her heart’s desire, and see a work fulfilled to which her resources were unequal. The apostle says, “I can do all things through Christ, who is my strength,” and yet He says we are not able to think anything, as of ourselves. Oh, blessed insufficiency! Oh, blessed All-Sufficiency! Oh, blessed nothingness, which brings us all things! Oh, blessed faith, whose rich dowry is, “All things are possible to him that ...

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for November 28

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for November 28 Morning “By grace ye are saved.” Ephesians 2 We have already seen how Paul describes what God’s grace has done for us; we shall now hear him recite what it has wrought in us if we are indeed saved. Ephesians 2:1 we were without spiritual life, but now we are made alive unto God; regeneration is as great a wonder as if the corpses in the churchyard should burst their graves and begin life again. Grace is life, sin is death, conversion is a resurrection. Ephesians 2:2 , Ephesians 2:3 What a humbling passage! The best of men were by nature no better than the worst. Satan found a willing servant in each one of us, and such we should still have been had not grace interposed. Ephesians 2:4 , Ephesians 2:5 That little sentence, “By grace ye are saved,” is the key of true divinity. Study it well, and believe it thoroughly, and you will escape a thousand doctrinal errors. Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for November 28

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for November 28 “Doing what God Can Bless ” - Deuteronomy 28:8 If we obey the LORD our God He will bless that which He gives us. Riches are no curse when blessed of the LORD. When men have more than they require for their immediate need and begin to lay up in storehouses, the dry rot of covetousness or the blight of hard-heartedness is apt to follow the accumulation; but with God’s blessing it is not so. Prudence arranges the saving, liberality directs the spending, gratitude maintains consecration, and praise sweetens enjoyment. It is a great mercy to have God’s blessing in one’s iron safe and on one’s banking account. What a favor is made ours by the last clause! "The LORD shall bless thee in all that thou settest thine hand unto." We would not put our hand to anything upon which we dare not ask God’s blessing, neither would we go about it without prayer and faith. But what a privilege to be able to look f...

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for November 28

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for November 28 Tozer in the Morning The Danger of World-worship A great deal can be learned about people by observing whom and what they imitate. The weak, for instance, imitate the strong; never the reverse. The poor imitate the rich. The self-assured are imitated by the timid and uncertain, the genuine is imitated by the counterfeit, and people all tend to imitate what they admire. By this definition power today lies with the world, not with the church, for it is the world that initiates and the church that imitates what she has initiated. By this definition the church admires the world. The church is uncertain and looks to the world for assurance. A weak church is aping a strong world to the amusement of intelligent sinners and to her own everlasting shame. Should any reader be inclined to dispute these conclusions, I ask him to take a look around. Look into almost any evangelical publication, browse through our bookstores, attend...

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 28th November 2024

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 28th November 2024 11/28 Matthew 12:6 6 I tell you, something greater than the temple is here. The Temple was the one place of worship where God dwelt in the midst of His people. When Jesus declared Himself to be greater than the Temple, He was defending the right of His disciples to pick grain on the Sabbath. He said that the priests work in the temple on the Sabbath and are blameless. Because Jesus is greater than the Temple, certainly His disciples can work on His behalf and be blameless as well. But there is more to the statement. To be greater than the Temple would mean that the residence of God in their midst had moved from the Holy of Holies to the body of Jesus! In this same chapter, Jesus will declare that someone greater than Jonah and greater than Solomon is present (Matthew 12:41-42). Jonah was perhaps the best example of a successful prophet to the Gentiles. Jesus was declaring that He would have greater success bringing Gentiles to God...

Worthy Brief - November 27, 2024

Worthy Brief - November 27, 2024 Put on some new clothes! Romans 13:11-14  And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed.  12  The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light.  13  Let us walk properly, as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy. 14  But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts. For nearly twenty years, Romans 13:12 has been my signature verse on every email I send, for me it’s a constant reminder that the long, dark night of this world is almost over, and the Day of the Lord is just about to dawn. Paul tells us to cast off the works of darkness. The Greek word he uses, apotithemi, means to throw something off yourself, to take it away and remove it completely. Ima...

Today;'s Daily Encounter Wednesday, November 27, 2024 The Smell of Thanksgiving Now he uses us to spread the knowledge of Christ everywhere, like a sweet perfume. Our lives are a Christ-like fragrance rising up to God. But this fragrance is perceived differently by those who are being saved and by those who are perishing.1 Don’t you just love the smells of the holidays? I was cooking the other day, when my daughter walked in the kitchen and said, “It smells like Thanksgiving, I want some of that!” I can’t remember what I was making that day, but I do remember thinking of all the smells that Thanksgiving brings, not just the turkey, stuffing and pumpkin pie, but the smell of warmth and the comfort of home, the scent of laughter and memories. I love all the smells of the season, from the delicious food baking in the oven to a fire crackling in the chimney; the suffocating scent of grandma’s perfume to the sticky kisses freely given by the youngest of the family. The smell of together...

True Vine Devotional for November 27

True Vine Devotional for November 27 “ Ye Are My Friends, if Ye Do the Things Which I Command You ” - John 15:14 Our Lord has said what He gave as proof of His friendship: He gave His life for us. He now tells us what our part is to be—to do the things which He commands. He gave His life to secure a place for His love in our hearts to rule us; the response His love calls us to, and empowers us for, is that we do what He commands us. As we know the dying love, we shall joyfully obey its commands. As we obey the commands, we shall know the love more fully. Christ had already said: “If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love.” He counts it needful to repeat the truth again: the one proof of our faith in His love, the one way to abide in it, the one mark of being true branches is—to do the things which He commands us. He began with absolute surrender of His life for us. He can ask nothing less from us. This alone is a life in His friendship. This truth, of the imperative ne...
