Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for November 8

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for November 8 Tozer in the Morning Overflowing Hope So strong, so beautiful is hope that it is scarcely possible to overpraise it. It is the divine alchemy that transmutes the base metal of adversity into gold. In the midst of death Paul could be bold and buoyant because he had firm confidence in the final outcome. "For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake," he said, but his heart remained cheerful knowing that "our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all" (2 Corinthians 4:11,17). His lovely little benediction pronounced over the Roman Christians shows how faith and peace and joy live with hope like four fair sisters dwelling in the same cottage: "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit" (Romans 15:13). Faith is confide

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for November 8

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for November 8 “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free” (Romans 8:2) There is a natural law of sin and sickness, and if we just let ourselves go and sink into the trend of circumstances we shall go down and sink under the power of the tempter. But there is another law of spiritual life and of physical life in Christ Jesus to which we can rise and through which we can counterpoise and overcome the other law that bears us down. But to do this requires real spiritual energy and fixed purpose and a settled posture and habit of faith. It is just the same when we bind the power in our factory. We must turn the belt on and keep it on. The power is there, but we must keep the connection and while we do so the law of this higher power will work and all the machinery will be in operation. There is a spiritual law of choosing, believing, abiding and holding steady in our walk with God which is essential to the working of the Holy Gh

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for November 8

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for November 8 Morning “Strive together with me in your prayers.” Romans 15:18-33 What plans of usefulness were in Paul’s mind at this time, and what he did after the uproar at Ephesus, we gather from Romans 15:18-33. Romans 15:20 , Romans 15:21 His was an aggressive policy, he pushed into the enemy’s territory, as all God’s servants should endeavour to do, for multitudes are still ignorant of the name of Jesus. Romans 15:22-24 Little did he know in what manner he would enter Rome. He thought to journey thither at his own cost as a free man, but the Lord had other plans for him: he would enter Rome, but only as a prisoner. Romans 15:25 , Romans 15:26 It seems that his business at Jerusalem was, for a second time, to carry help to the needy brethren. Such generous tokens of love from the new converts would greatly tend to break down the prejudice against the Gentiles, which still lingered in the Jewish capital. Romans

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for November 8

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for November 8 “The Magnitude of Grace ” - 2 Corinthians 12:9 Our weakness should be prized as making room for divine strength. We might never have known the power of grace if we had not felt the weakness of nature. Blessed be the LORD for the thorn in the flesh, and the messenger of Satan, when they drive us to the strength of God. This is a precious word from our LORD’s own lip. It has made the writer laugh for joy. God’s grace enough for me! I should think it is. Is not the sky enough for the bird and the ocean enough for the fish? The All-Sufficient is sufficient for my largest want. He who is sufficient for earth and heaven is certainly able to meet the case of one poor worm like me. Let us, then, fall back upon our God and His grace. If He does not remove our grief, He will enable us to bear it. His strength shall be poured into us till the worm shall thresh the mountains, and a nothing shall be victor over all

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 8th November 2024 11/8 Matthew 3:15 15 But Jesus answered him, "Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he consented. Jesus began His ministry by going to John the Baptist to be baptized. When John heard Jesus' request, John said it was Jesus that should baptize him. Our verse today is Jesus' response. There was nothing for which Jesus needed to repent. Nevertheless, Jesus was obeying the leading of the Holy Spirit and leaving an example for us to follow (John 13:15). There are times when we will be led to do things simply as an example. If we expect others to do them, we should lead the way by living out what we are teaching. The baptism of John was one of repentance of sin and preparing the heart to receive Jesus. Baptism after the death and resurrection of Jesus took on a new meaning. It is a picture of our associating ourselves with Him in His death, burial, and resurrection. We go under

Worthy Brief - November 7, 2024

Worthy Brief - November 7, 2024 Be God's messenger! Jonah 3:5-9 So the people of Nineveh believed God, proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least of them. Then word came to the king of Nineveh; and he arose from his throne and laid aside his robe, covered himself with sackcloth and sat in ashes. And he caused it to be proclaimed and published throughout Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything; do not let them eat, or drink water. But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily to God; yes, let every one turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands.9Who can tell if God will turn and relent, and turn away from His fierce anger, so that we may not perish? Jonah preached his 8-word sermon and the Ninevites were struck with the fear of the Lord and moved to complete repentance. The king stood up (a sign of his serious intent), removed his royal

Today's Daily Encounter Thursday, November 7, 2024 What Am I Communicating? What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don’t show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone? Suppose you see a brother or sister who has no food or clothing, and you say, “Good-bye and have a good day; stay warm and eat well”  " but then you don’t give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do? So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless. Now someone may argue, “Some people have faith; others have good deeds.” But I say, “How can you show me your faith if you don’t have good deeds? I will show you my faith by my good deeds”.1 The Lord calls us to share His truth with others, but sometimes our actions and attitudes can contradict the words that come out of our mouths. Every day, most of us communicate something to someone. We send a message with what we say, with what we do and with what w

True Vine Devotional for November 7

True Vine Devotional for November 7 “ Already Ye Are Clean Because of the Word I Have Spoken Unto You ” - John 15:3 What is the pruning knife of this heavenly Husbandman? It is often said to be affliction. By no means in the first place. How would it then fare with many who have long seasons free from adversity; or with some on whom God appears to shower down kindness all their life long? No; it is the Word of God that is the knife, shaper than any two-edged sword, that pierces even to the dividing asunder of the soul and spirit, and is quick to discern the thoughts and intents of the heart. It is only when affliction leads to this discipline of the Word that it becomes a blessing; the lack of this heart-cleansing through the Word is the reason why affliction is so often unsanctified. Not even Paul’s thorn in the flesh could become a blessing until Christ’s Word—“My strength is made perfect in weakness”—had made him see the danger of self-exaltation, and made him willing to rejoice in

When they buried the blind preacher, George Matheson, they lined his grave with red roses in memory of his love-life of sacrifice. And it was this man, so beautifully and significantly honored, who wrote, "O Love that wilt not let me go, I rest my weary soul in Thee, I give Thee back the life I owe, That in thine ocean depths its flow May richer, fuller be. "O Light that followest all my way, I yield my flickering torch to Thee, My heart restores its borrowed ray, That in Thy sunshine’s blaze its day May brighter, fairer be. "O Joy that seekest me through pain, I cannot close my heart to Thee, I trace the rainbow through the rain, And feel the promise is not vain, That morn shalt tearless be. Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for November 7

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for November 7 Tozer in the Morning Savior But Not Lord? In the New Testament salvation and discipleship are so closely related as to be indivisible. They are not identical, but as with Siamese twins they are joined by a tie which can be severed only at the price of death. Yet they are being severed in evangelical circles today. In the working creed of the average Christian salvation is held to be immediate and automatic, while discipleship is thought to be something optional which the Christian may delay indefinitely or never accept at all. It is not uncommon to hear Christian workers urging seekers to accept Christ now and leave moral and social questions to be decided later. The notion is that obedience and discipleship are unrelated to salvation. We may be saved by believing a historic fact about Jesus Christ (that He died for our sins and rose again) and applying this to our personal situation. The whole biblical concept of Lordship

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for November 7

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for November 7 “I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee” (Isaiah 41:10) God has three ways of helping us: First, He says, “I will strengthen thee”; that is, I will make you a little stronger yourself. And secondly, “I will help thee”; that is, I will add My strength to your strength, but you shall lead and I will help you. But thirdly, when you are ready, “I will uphold thee with the right hand of My righteousness”; that is, I will lift you up bodily and carry you altogether, and it will neither be your strength or My help, but My complete upholding. Hence it must be quite true, that when we come to the end of our strength, we come to the beginning of His, and that in Him the weakest are the strongest, and the most helpless the most helped. “He giveth power to the faint,” but to “them that have no might” at all “He gives more strength,” and His word forever is, “My grace is sufficient for thee.” The answer is a paradox

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for November 7

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for November 7 Morning “Let us not sleep as do others.” Acts 20:1-16 The riot at Ephesus had been quelled by the judicious words of the recorder of the city. Acts 20:1 Not as a coward did the apostle flee from conflict, but after all danger was over in Ephesus, he carried the war into other regions. See with what affection he bade farewell to the brethren; embracing them as a father does his children. Acts 20:2 , Acts 20:3 With unwearied energy he laboured to spread the gospel. The words of the historian are few, but we know from the epistles that each day was crowded with work for Jesus. Acts 20:4-6 Paul, having seen his dear Philippian brethren, came over with Luke and joined his seven companions at Troas. Acts 20:7 He felt that he should never speak to them again, and, therefore, he prolonged his address. Acts 20:8 The place thus became heated, and being very crowded, the air was heavy, and it was not easy for the

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for November 7 “True Humility Rewarded ” - Luke 18:14 It ought not to be difficult for us to humble ourselves, for what have we to be proud of? We ought to take the lowest place without being told to do so. If we are sensible and honest, we shall be little in our own eyes. Especially before the LORD in prayer we shall shrink to nothing. There we cannot speak of merit, for we have none; our one and only appeal must be to mercy: "God be merciful to me a sinner." Here is a cheering word from the throne. We shall be exalted by the LORD if we humble ourselves. For us the way upward is downhill. When we are stripped of self we are clothed with humility, and this is the best of wear. The LORD will exalt us in peace and happiness of mind; He will exalt us into knowledge of His Word and fellowship with Himself; He will exalt us in the enjoyment of sure pardon and justification. The LORD puts His honors upon those who

These are the words of John the Baptist, the cousin of Jesus, whom God sent to prepare the way for Jesus. It had been centuries since the Jews had seen a real prophet of God. His message was simple. They should all repent of their ways and prepare for the coming of the Messiah. Jews flocked into the wilderness to be baptized by John. When the religious leaders came to see John, they were shocked to hear him call them a family of baby snakes. He told them that they needed to demonstrate with their lives that they had indeed repented. That is true for all of us. It is one thing to tell God we are sorry for our ways, but another thing to actually change our ways. Just because we are involved in religious activities and

Worthy Brief - November 6, 2024

Worthy Brief - November 6, 2024 Have mercy on me! Jonah 4:1-5 But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he became angry. So he prayed to the LORD, and said, "Ah, LORD, was not this what I said when I was still in my country? Therefore I fled previously to Tarshish; for I know that You [are] a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, One who relents from doing harm. "Therefore now, O LORD, please take my life from me, for [it is] better for me to die than to live!" Then the LORD said, "[Is it] right for you to be angry?" So Jonah went out of the city and sat on the east side of the city. There he made himself a shelter and sat under it in the shade, till he might see what would become of the city. We continue looking at Jonah, and find him in Chapter 4 displeased with God's mercy toward Nineveh. The Assyrians were arch-enemies of Israel and among the cruelest nations in history. Instead of being elated that God spared 120,000

Today's Daily Encounter Wednesday, November 6, 2024 Our Helper in Prayer And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will.1 Has it happened to you that when you decide to dedicate more time to prayer, you kneel, prepare to talk to the Lord and go blank? Sure, you can mention a few words about what you need Him to do for you and your family, but you should pray for more than that, right? Yes, you should. The needs of the believer are in fact the Father's concern, nothing escapes him. However, he tells his children to "not only look out for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too." (Philippians 2:4 NLT) Selfless prayer may not come naturally to us, but thank God He has provided us

True Vine Devotional for November 6

True Vine Devotional for November 6 “ And Every Branch That Beareth Fruit, He Cleanseth, That it May Bear More Fruit ” - John 15:2 There are two remarkable things about the vine. There is not a plant of which the fruit has so much spirit in it, of which spirit can be so abundantly distilled as the vine. And there is not a plantnwhich so soon runs into wild wood, that hinders its fruit, and therefore needs the most mercilessnpruning. I look out of my window here on large vineyards: the chief care of the vinedresser is then pruning. You may have a trellis vine rooting so deep in good soil that it needs neither digging, nornmanuring, nor watering: pruning it cannot dispense with, if it is to bear good fruit. Some tree needsnoccasional pruning; others bear perfect fruit without any: the vine must have it. And so our Lordntells us, here at the very outset of the parable, that the one work the Father does to the branch thatnbears fruit is: He cleanseth it, that it may bear more fruit. Consi

Streams in the Desert Devotional for November 6

Streams in the Desert Devotional for November 6 "As many as I love I rebuke and chasten" (Revelation 3:19). God takes the most eminent and choicest of His servants for the choicest and most eminent afflictions. They who have received most grace from God are able to bear most afflictions from God. Affliction does not hit the saint by chance, but by direction. God does not draw His bow at a venture. Every one of His arrows goes upon a special errand and touches no breast but his against whom it is sent. It is not only the grace, but the glory of a believer when we can stand and take affliction quietly. -- Joseph Caryl If all my days were sunny, could I say, "In His fair land He wipes all tears away"? If I were never weary, could I keep Close to my heart, "He gives His loved ones sleep"? Were no graves mine, might I not come to deem The Life Eternal but a baseless dream? This psalm and its opening verses is in the very center of the Scriptures by an exact count of letters and verses. Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for November 6

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for November 6 Tozer in the Morning THE WALK OF FAITH There are spiritual lessons for every Christian believer in the life of godly Enoch, seventh generation from Adam through Adam's third son, Seth. We are impressed that he could resist the devil and find fellowship with his Creator-God, for he lived in a worldly society headed for destruction. Enoch's daily walk was a walk of faith, a walk of fellowship with God. The Scriptures are trying to assure us that if Enoch could live and walk with God by faith in the midst of his sinful generation, we likewise should be able to follow his example because the human race is the same and God is the same! Beyond that, Enoch reminds us that the quality and boldness of our faith will be the measure of our preparation for the return of Jesus Christ to this earth. We walk by faith as Enoch did, and although it is now 20 centuries after Christ's sojourn on earth, we hold firmly to the New Te

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for November 6 Morning “Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed?” Acts 19:1-20 After the defeat of the Jews before the judgment seat of Gallio, Paul remained at Corinth for some time, and then sailed to Ephesus, where they desired him to remain; but he thought fit to proceed by vessel to Cesarea, and onward to Jerusalem. Thence he travelled again to Antioch, and set out on another tour. This indefatigable apostle was always at work, spending and being spent for the Lord Jesus. Acts 19:1 , Acts 19:2 There are even now professing Christians who know nothing of the Holy Ghost, of the spirit of repentance, of the new birth, of adoption, of holy joy, or of sanctified fellowship. What do we each one of us personally know of the Holy Spirit? Acts 19:6-9 and separated the disciples, disputing or discoursing “Temple, or house, or barn, or school (The gospel consecrates the place,) No matter where, so Jesus rule And t

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional for November 6 “Delight and Desires ” - Psalms 37:4 Delight in God has a transforming power and lifts a man above the gross desire of our fallen nature. Delight in Jehovah is not only sweet in itself, but it sweetens the whole soul, till the longings of the heart become such that the LORD can safely promise to fulfill them. Is not that a grand delight which molds our desires till they are like the desires of God? Our foolish way is to desire and then set to work to compass what we desire. We do not go to work in God’s way, which is to seek Him first and then expect all things to be added unto us. If we will let our heart be filled with God till it runs over with delight, then the LORD Himself will take care that we shall not want any good thing. Instead of going abroad for joys let us stay at home with God and drink waters out of our own fountain. He can do for us far more than all our friends. It is better to be cont

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 6th November 2024 11/6 Matthew 2:13  3 Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said,"Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him." We will be looking at the life of Christ four times, once in each of the Gospels. Matthew presents Jesus as the Messiah of Israel. He links numerous Old Testament passages with events in Jesus' life to show that sending Jesus to save us was God's plan from the beginning. In Divine Messiah I showed that in nearly every chapter of Matthew Jesus is seen as doing something the Scriptures ascribe to the eternal God of Israel. It is one thing for Jesus to be a great teacher, but another thing altogether to say that He is God, one with the Father from all eternity. From His birth we see the ancient conflict between good and evil, as Herod was inspired to try t

Worthy Brief - November 5, 2024

Worthy Brief - November 5, 2024 God cares ... for everyone! Jonah 3:1-2 Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying, "Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach to it the message that I tell you." 1 Corinthians 13:1-2 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. When the Lord gave Jonah a second chance, He didn't change His mind about the prophet's destination. He didn't lighten the load or change the burden Jonah was destined to carry. There was no negotiation with Jonah where the Lord expressed understanding about his reluctance to go to Nineveh. God didn't concede to send him to Tarshish just because he'd been heading in that direction anyway. Jonah's disobedience

Today's Daily Encounter Tuesday, November 5, 2024

Today's Daily Encounter Tuesday, November 5, 2024 Taste and See Taste and See Taste and see that the Lord is good…1 I have been caring for my diabetic aunt for a couple of years now and have become accustomed to the sugar-free treats she enjoys sharing with me. But the other day, when she poured me a glass of beet juice, I could only wrinkle my nose as she offered me the bright red liquid. Any health benefits that could be mine were overpowered by the smell of dirt! Although the color was beautiful, the aroma was not. Nevertheless, she convinced me to try it, and what a surprise to find that it was not only refreshing, but very tasty! She had used a natural agave sweetener that made the, otherwise bitter, vegetable taste good!    Galatians 5:22 says that goodness is a Fruit of the Spirit. As Believers in Christ, we want to bring goodness to those around us by offering them something that is good for them  " Jesus! God is the only source of all that is Good. And as we keep in

The Way by Kevin Pauley

The Way by Kevin Pauley How's Your Hearing? Date Posted: November 5, 2024 “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” - Matthew 11:15 I am slowly and inexorably going deaf. I finally admitted this a couple of years ago. I got tired of pretending to hear what people were saying; tired of people getting aggravated with me because I simply nodded and smiled when I failed to catch what they had said, and then didn’t show up when I was supposed to. My wife ended up being the deciding factor. “You’re hard of hearing.” She explained as though to a child. “You need hearing aids. It’s not the end of the world.” She’s wonderful; and she means well. She loves me and she’s trying to let me know that being deaf or half crippled doesn’t make me any less of a man. It’s her love speaking. But it’s difficult to watch your little girl try to tell you something and only get a jumbled mess. It’s tough to love music and enjoy singing your whole life and then slowly, gradually lose the ability to hear you

Streams in the Desert Devotional for November 5

Streams in the Desert Devotional for November 5 "Is there anything too hard for Jehovah?" (Genesis 18:14). Here is God’s loving challenge to you and to me today. He wants us to think of the deepest, highest, worthiest desire and longing of our hearts, something which perhaps was our desire for ourselves or for someone dear to us, yet which has been so long unfulfilled that we have looked upon it as only a lost desire, that which might have been but now cannot be, and so have given up hope of seeing it fulfilled in this life. That thing, if it is in line with what we know to be His expressed will (as a son to Abraham and Sarah was), God intends to do for us, even if we know that it is of such utter impossibility that we only laugh at the absurdity of anyone’s supposing it could ever now come to pass. That thing God intends to do for us, if we will let Him. "Is anything too hard for the Lord?" Not when we believe in Him enough to go forward and do His will, and let H

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for November 5

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for November 5 Tozer in the Morning Altering God's Image . . . at the root of all superstition is an inaccurate and unworthy conception of the character of God. To be more explicit, men believe God to be whimsical, and consequently expect Him to be impulsive and unpredictable in His dealings with mankind. Out of this notion comes a score of superstitious fancies that have gotten themselves accepted through the years. Various fears originate here. Fear of black cats, omens, signs and magic numbers results from the ignoble idea that God is a kind of playful Puck who delights in practical jokes and Halloween tricks. The only defense against this is to know some word or sign that will protect the victim from the celestial prankster, hence the thousand and one marriage customs, funeral usages, and practices touching birth, death, travel, food, clothing, sleep, planting, harvesting, illness and almost every other phase of our life on earth.

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for November 5

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional for November 5 “I in them, and Thou in Me” (John 17:23) If we would be enlarged to the full measure of God’s purpose, let us endeavor to realize something of our own capacities for His filling. We little know the size of a human soul and spirit. Never, until He renews, cleanses and enters the heart can we have any adequate conception of the possibilities of the being whom God made in His very image, and whom He now renews after the pattern of the Lord Jesus Himself. We know, however, that God has made the human soul to be His temple and abode, and that He knows how to make the house that can hold His infinite fulness. We know something of this as all our nature quickens into spring tide life at the coming of the Holy Spirit, and as from time to time new baptisms awaken the dormant powers and susceptibilities that we did not know we possessed. Oh, let us give Him the right to make the best of us, and, with wonder filled, we shall someday behold the gl

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for November 5

Charles Spurgeon's "Morning & Evening" Devotional for November 5 Morning “In Him we live, and move, and have our being.” Acts 17:16-34 Acts 17:16 Was it not well that the troublesome Jews drove the apostle to Athens before his companions, that he might, by surveying that idolatrous city alone, find a fresh stimulus for his zeal? Acts 17:17 In the market he met with idle loungers ready to listen to anything and everything new; and even upon such soil, like the sower in the parable, he scattered his seed. Acts 17:18-21 Nothing could have pleased Paul better than to address so large and important an assembly as that which gathered on Mars Hill. With a considerable amount of courtesy the philosophers invited him to speak, curiosity to hear his novel teaching being their leading motive. The doctrine of the resurrection seemed most to startle them. The immortality of the soul they had already known, but the resurrection of the body was a new idea. Paul addressed them both
