Worthy Brief - January 31, 2024 Be valiant! Judges 6:12 And the angel of the LORD appeared to him, and said to him, The LORD is with you, you mighty man of valor! Judges 6 begins with an angel talking to Gideon saying, "thou mighty man of valor!" However, in this passage Gideon isn't feeling very valiant -- he's consumed with his circumstances -- how poor his family is and how he's the least of his fathers' house. He doesn't feel he's done anything worthy of being called valiant, yet the angel still addresses him "mighty man of valor!" Gideon is not the only one who struggles with feeling unvaliant, though, is he? Even the best of us struggle with feelings of failure and defeat. But we must remember that we are part of the Lord's army -- and in the Lord's army, we do not depend upon our own strength. We depend upon the power of the Lord! We depend upon the victory that He has already won! Imagine the countless thousands of saints like

Today's Daily Encounter Wednesday, January 31, 2024 I Love You More Than... "Neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."1 Recently, I heard a woman sharing of a beautiful China set she owns that she brings out only around the holidays. This China set has been passed down from generation to generation, therefore, it is highly treasured in her family. Over Christmas, she hosted a dinner where her parents and other family members were present. After dinner, she started rinsing the dishes and accidentally knocked some plates to the floor! She tightly closed her eyes as she heard the glass plates falling to the ground. When she opened her eyes, she saw that six of these beautiful plates had shattered, with no hopes of being repaired. While she was still processing what had just happened, she heard her mom yell from the living room, "I love you more than those plates!"

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 31st January 2024 1/31 Genesis 32:9-10 9 And Jacob said, "O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, O LORD who said to me, 'Return to your country and to your kindred, that I may do you good,' 10 I am not worthy of the least of all the deeds of steadfast love and all the faithfulness that you have shown to your servant, for with only my staff I crossed this Jordan, and now I have become two camps. Jacob received the report that Esau and four hundred men were on their way to meet him. His last word from Esau, twenty years earlier, was that Esau would kill him. Jacob divided up his family and flocks into three groups. He sent the first group ahead hoping that if it was attacked, the other group would escape. As a last resort, he prayed, and his prayer showed that his heart was changing. He began by acknowledging the God of his fathers as the LORD. Remember that when he left his home, he was trying to make a deal with God. "If

Worthy Brief - January 30, 2024 Brake early 1 Corinthians 10:8 We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day. Numbers 25:1-3 Now Israel remained in Acacia Grove, and the people began to commit harlotry with the women of Moab. They invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods. So Israel was joined to Baal of Peor, and the anger of the Lord was aroused against Israel. When the Apostle Paul wrote this letter to the Corinthians, he was speaking to a church that was surrounded with sexual immorality. The city of Corinth was a haven of hedonism where many temples hosted hundreds of prostitutes which were visited by vast multitudes of foreigners. In the ancient world, the term "Corinthianize" indicated a life of sexual promiscuity. Paul connects the situation in Corinth with that which is found in Numbers 25. With YHVH's blessing on the young Israelite nation, th

But the God of your father spoke to me last night, saying, 'Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.' Jacob and Laban continued to trick and cheat each the other for twenty years. God told Jacob that it was time to return to his home. God promised to be with Jacob. Instead of trusting God to protect him and telling Laban he was leaving, he waited until Laban was away and tried to sneak off. Laban got wind of the departure and gathered his men and pursued Jacob and his family. God intervened by giving Laban a dream in which he was told, "Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad" (Genesis 31:24). If Laban was to not even speak a bad word to Jacob, surely he was also not to harm him or to take his flocks. Jacob defended his departure by saying God had told him to leave and that Laban had been unfair in his practices. Laban simpl

Worthy Brief - January 29, 2024 Learn to shift gears! Romans 15:13 Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost. Every time I turn on the news it seems the new buzzword is – CHANGE! So how can we just shift gears and change? Let's learn a lesson about basic automotive mechanics. Generally a car has between 4 and 5 gears. The first gear maximizes power in exchange for speed. As you move through the gears, you can continue to go faster, yet without using any more power, and before you know it – you have to look at the speedometer – cause nobody wants a speeding ticket! So what can we learn from this? Do you want a breakthrough? Do you want a new direction? Then you need to take that first step! You need to put all your focus – all your energy into that first initial gear! Yes, it takes all your strength, and yet it seems like you're moving sooo slow -- but be encouraged, because once you start mo

Today's Daily Encounter Monday, January 29, 2024 Listening First My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak...1 Nelson Mandela was known for his leadership skills, but what set him apart from other leaders was his ability to listen. His story began in the heart of tribal leadership where, as the son of a tribal chief, he learned invaluable lessons that would shape his own leadership style for years to come. When asked how he became such a great leader, Mandela recalled a simple yet profound practice he observed during those tribal meetings with his father. He noted that the elders always sat in a circle that signified equality and unity. But, what stood out to him most of all was that his father, the chief, was always the last to speak.   In a world where most everyone wants their opinions heard; many want to speak first and be the loudest voice in an argument, Mandela's lesson emphasizes the power of restraint and careful

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional: January 29th

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional: January 29th “Obedience Brings Blessing ” - Deuteronomy 12:28 Though salvation is not by the works of the law, yet the blessings which are promised to obedience are not denied to the faithful servants of God. The curses our LORD took away when He was made a curse for us, but no clause of blessing has been abrogated. We are to note and listen to the revealed will of the LORD, giving our attention not to portions of it but to "all these words." There must be no picking and choosing but an impartial respect to all that God has commanded. This is the road of blessedness for the Father and for His children. The LORD’s blessing is upon His chosen to the third and fourth generation. If they walk uprightly before Him, He will make all men know that they are a seed which the LORD has blessed. No blessing can come to us or ours through dishonesty or double dealing. The ways of worldly conformity and unholiness cannot

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional: January 29th “Send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared” (Nehemiah 8:10) That was a fine picture in the days of Nehemiah, when they were celebrating their glorious Feast of Tabernacles. “Neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the Lord is your strength. Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions to them for whom nothing is prepared.” How many there are on every side for whom nothing is prepared! Let us find out some sad and needy heart for whom there is no one else to think or care. Let us pray for some one that has none to pray for him. Let us be like Him who, one Christmas Day, gave His life and His all, and came to those who would not appreciate His holy gift, but rejected His blessed Babe, and murdered His only Son. Let us not be afraid to know something even of the love that is unrequited and is thrown away on the unworthy. That is the love of Christ, and God has for such love a rich recompense. How Christ must almos

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for January 29

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for January 29 Tozer in the Morning Standing for Truth We have developed in recent times a peace-loving, soft-spoken, tame and harmless brand of Christian of whom the world has no fear and for whom it has little respect. We are careful, for instance, never to speak in public against any of the false cults lest we be thought intolerant. We fear to talk against the destructive sins of modern civilization for fear someone will brand us as bigoted and narrow. Little by little we have been forced off the hard earth into a religious cloud-land where we are permitted to wing our harmless way around, like swallows at sundown, saying nothing that might stir the ire of the sons of this world. That Neo-Christianity, which seems for the time to be the most popular (and is certainly the most aggressive), is very careful not to oppose sin. It wins its crowds by amusing them and its converts by hiding from them the full implications of the Christian mess

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 29th January 2024 1/29 Genesis 29:25 25 And in the morning, behold, it was Leah! And Jacob said to Laban, "What is this you have done to me? Did I not serve with you for Rachel? Why then have you deceived me?" The obvious answer to the question in the above verse is that Jacob reaped what he had sown. He had deceived his own father into giving him the blessing due Esau, and now his uncle Laban has deceived him into marrying Leah. God has a way of helping us see our sins. He brings people into our lives that show us how we act toward Him. Jacob thought he could make deals with God while harboring hidden motives. (Genesis 28:20-21). God sees our hearts, and He will help us to see them too. Laban saw that Jacob was a good worker and was blessed in what he did. That was why he tricked him into fourteen years of service to him. God will deal with Laban too. We see ourselves in others. Jacob will have to go through a long round of deceiving and being

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional: January 28th

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional: January 28th “Tears Shall Cease ” - Revelation 21:4 Yes, we shall carne to this if we are believers. Sorrow shalt cease, and tears shall be wiped away. This is the world of weeping, but it passes away. There shall be a new heaven and a new earth, so says the first verse of this chapter; and therefore there will be nothing to weep over concerning the Fall and its consequent miseries. Read the second verse and note how it speaks of the bride and her marriage. The Lamb’s wedding is a time for boundless pleasure, and tears would be out of place. The third verse says that God Himself will dwell among men; and surely at His right hand there are pleasures forevermore, and tears can no longer flow. What will our state be when there will be no more sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain? This will be more glorious than we can as yet imagine. O eyes that are red with weeping, cease your scalding flow, for in a

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional: January 28th

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional: January 28th “That my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full” (John 15:11) There is a joy that springs spontaneously in the heart without external or even rational cause. It is an artesian fountain. It rejoices because it cannot help it. It is the glory of God; it is the heart of Christ, it is the joy divine of which He says, “These things have I spoken unto you that My joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.” And your joy no man taketh from you. He who possesses this fountain is not discouraged by surrounding circumstances, but is often surprised at the deep, sweet gladness that comes without any apparent cause, and even comes most strongly when everything in our condition and circumstances is fitted to fill us with sorrow and depression. It is the nightingale in the heart, which sings at night, and sings because it is its nature to sing. It is the glorified and incorruptible joy which belongs to heaven, and antic

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for January 28 Tozer in the Morning Seeker, Pretender, or In-the-Rut Disciple . . . People in the rut never know when the last leaves are falling for them. Why are people in the rut? There are several possibilities. They may never have been truly converted at all, and this is one of our great problems now. We have a dozen ways of getting people into the kingdom of God, when the Lord said there was only one. They leak in, ooze in, come in by osmosis and get in by marriage--just get in by any kind of way. But there is only one true way. When people find that after being in the church for years they are not making much progress, they ought to examine themselves and wonder whether they have been truly converted. True conversion means radical repentance, a changed life, conscious forgiveness of sin and a spiritual rebirth. Genuinely converted people, as the old Methodists said, had a radical repentance, which eventuated in a changed life. Then

Like father like son. Isaac had surely heard the stories about his father's encounters in Egypt and with the Philistines and how he claimed Sarah was his sister to save himself, and yet departed more prosperous than when he arrived. Isaac followed his father's bad example. Fortunately, no one tried to take Rebecca before it was discovered that they were husband and wife. Abraham's use of "sister" was half true. For Isaac, it was a complete lie. The sin of the father was compounded in the son. Once again we see the grace of God allowing Isaac not to suffer the defilement of his wife and even blessing his harvest. Unlike his father, he did not

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 27th January 2024 1/27 Genesis 25:33 33 Jacob said, "Swear to me now." So he swore to him and sold his birthright to Jacob. Esau had come in from hunting all day and was famished. He smelled Jacob's lintel stew and pleaded for a bowl. Jacob knew of Esau's value of the carnal over the spiritual and so offered him a bowl in exchange for his birthright. The birthright in later Israel meant a double portion of the inheritance and the leadership of the family. Esau justified the exchange by saying his birthright wouldn't do any good if he died of starvation. One day without food will not kill you. Esau simply favored the carnal and immediate gratification. Esau made the exchange and forever regretted it. The scene is repeated millions of times throughout the world. Our old nature will justify giving up precious things for momentary gratification. We give up things like virginity, holiness, character, and some even give up their very soul

Worthy Brief - January 26, 2024 It's the time for blossoming! Isaiah 35:1-2 The wilderness and the solitary place shall be glad for them; and the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose. One thing I absolutely love about Israel is that fruit grows everywhere in abundance. Delicious citrus fruit, mango, pomegranate, grapes, cactus fruit, avocado -- and much much more! It's common to see people people pick and eat it as they walk by. And it doesn't taste like your average western fruit either. It seems to be especially sweet. It must be because God has blessed the land it's grown upon! On Thursday, (yesterday) marked the Jewish holiday of Tu B'Shvat and the beginning of the new year for trees. Today's Daily Encounter Friday, January 26, 2024 Facing the Giant "Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine. Saul said to David, 'Go, and the Lord be with you.'"1 Of all the great narratives we read in the Old Testament, the thrilling story of David and Goliath remains one of the most powerful and impactful. Imagine David, the shepherd boy, approaching the three-meter giant, carrying a sling and five smooth stones in his pocket, and entering the battlefield. I imagine David stepping forward and explaining to King Saul how he planned to defeat Goliath. Before even facing the Philistine enemy, David had to fight his way through battles more familiar to him such as the scorn of detractors and the objections of his brothers. At firs

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional: January 26th

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional: January 26th “God Routs Fear ” - Job 33:27-28 How this should cut up root and branch all silly, superstitious fears! Even if there were any truth in witchcraft and omens, they could not affect the people of the LORD. Those whom God blessed, devils cannot curse. Ungodly men, like Balaam, may cunningly plot the overthrow of the LORD’s Israel; but with all their secrecy and policy they are doomed to fail. Their powder is damp; the edge of their sword is blunted. They gather together; but as the LORD is not with them, they gather together in vain. We may sit still and let them weave their nets, for we shall not be taken in them. Though they call in the aid of Beelzebub and employ all his serpentine craft, it will avail them nothing: the spells will not work, the divination will deceive them. What a blessing this is! How it quiets the heart! God’s Jacobs wrestle with God, but none shall wrestle with them and prevail. God’s

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional: January 26th “I called him alone and blessed him” (Isaiah 51:2) When we were in the East we noticed the beautiful process of raising rice. The rice is sown on a morass of mud and water, ploughed up by great buffaloes, and after a few weeks it springs up and appears above the water with its beautiful pale green shoots. The seed has been sown very thickly and the plants are clustered together in great numbers, so that you can pull up a score at a single handful. But now comes the process of transplanting. He first plants us and lets us grow very close to some of His children, and in great clusters in the nursery or the hothouse, but when we reach a certain stage we must be transplanted, or come to nothing. He calls us out by His Spirit and Providence into situations where we have to lean directly on Him, where He puts upon us a weight of responsibility and service so great that we have an opportunity of developing and are thrown upon the great resource

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for January 26 Tozer in the Morning In the Pursuit of God - Meekness and Rest Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. Matt.5:5A A fairly accurate description of the human race might be furnished one unacquainted with it by taking the Beatitudes, turning them wrong side out and saying, `Here is your human race.' For the exact opposite of the virtues in the Beatitudes are the very qualities which distinguish human life and conduct. In the world of men we find nothing approaching the virtues of which Jesus spoke in the opening words of the famous Sermon on the Mount. Instead of poverty of spirit we find the rankest kind of pride; instead of mourners we find pleasure seekers; instead of meekness, arrogance; instead of hunger after righteousness we hear men saying, `I am rich and increased with goods and have need of nothing'; instead of mercy we find cruelty; instead of purity of heart, corrupt imaginings; instead of pe

Wayside Chapel Daily Devotional 26th January 2024 1/26 Genesis 24:58 58 And they called Rebekah and said to her, "Will you go with this man?" She said, "I will go." In Western culture, we don't think much of arranged marriages, but much of the world still has that custom. Abraham had sent his servant to find a bride for Isaac. The servant asked God to reveal who it was by having her come to the well and offer to draw water for him and the camels. He had men with him who could have drawn the water, and camels do drink a lot of water, so this was a pretty demanding sign. Rebecca did just that, and she was a relative. The servant knew this was the woman. Then he went to her parents and told them what had just happened. They realized it was of the LORD and were willing to send her to Isaac as a bride, but they wanted her to stay ten days so they could say goodbye. The servant was eager to return and asked to go the next day. Imagine your child engaged and leaving al

Worthy Brief - January 25, 2024 Hello? Anyone home? Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. You know how sometimes we get a phone call from someone who didn’t intend to dial us? And what do we usually say? Sorry, you have the wrong number. Well, here’s a bit of food for thought. What if it’s not the wrong number they just dialed? What if they actually dialed the right number, only they didn’t know it?? Some of you may think it's a little radical but my wife answered a phone call like that ... and over an hour later, they were still talking about the Lord. This young man got an earful and boy was he ever touched. God is everywhere and He is in everything. Nothing happens that He didn’t know from the beginning of time. We need to be ready to jump on an opportunity to share His goodness even though in the natural it might seem a little strange -- forget natural! We need to operate in the

Today's Daily Encounter Thursday, January 25, 2024 Know These Truths "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.1 I've often heard of Christians who walk away from the Lord because they are not sure if they really "believe". Many of them have based their Christianity on how well life has treated them. If God is good to them, then they want to be Christians; if things are tough, then surely God is not with them so they choose to walk away. But God is gracious in His love and mercy toward us and all He really requires of His children is to know that they are loved. John 3:16 is known as the most precious verse in the Bible because it shows us how and why God loves us. All we are asked to do is "believe"! The definition of the word "believe" is: "To know something is true". But it is our sin that separates us from God. Our weakness for the temptations of t

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional: January 25th

Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional: January 25th “He Acts on Honest Confession ” - Job 33:27-28 This is a word of truth, gathered from the experience of a man of God, and it is tantamount to a promise. What the LORD has done, and is doing, He will continue to do while the world standeth. The LORD will receive into His bosom all who come to Him with a sincere confession of their sin; in fact, He is always on the lookout to discover any that are in trouble because of their faults. Can we not endorse the language here used? Have we not sinned, sinned personally so as to say, "I have sinned"? Sinned willfully, having perverted that which is right? Sinned so as to discover that there is no profit in it but an eternal loss? Let us, then, go to God with this honest acknowledgment. He asks no more. We can do no less. Let us plead His promise in the name of Jesus. He will deliver us from the pit of hell which yawns for us; He will grant us life and lig

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional: January 25th

Days of Heaven on Earth Devotional: January 25th “Hold fast that which is good” (1 Thessalonians 5:21) It is a great thing to be able to receive new truth and blessing without sacrificing the truths already proved, and abandoning foundations already laid. Some persons are always laying the foundations, and they present at last, the appearance of a lot of abandoned sites and half constructed buildings, and nothing is ever brought to completion. The fact that you are abandoning to-day for some new truth the things that a year ago you counted most precious and believed to be divinely true, should be sufficient evidence that you will probably a year from to-day abandon your present convictions for the next new light that comes to you. God is ever wanting to add to us, to develop us, to enlarge us, to teach us more and more, but it is ever in the line of things which He has already taught us, and in which we have been established. While we are to “prove all things,” let us “hold fast that w

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for January 25

Morning and Evening with A.W. Tozer Devotional for January 25 Tozer in the Morning Books and the Christian The book that informs us without inspiring us may be indispensable to the scientist, the lawyer, the physician, but mere information is not enough for the minister. If knowledge about things constituted learning, the encyclopedia would be all the library one needed for a fruitful ministry. The successful Christian, however, must know God, himself and his fellow men. Such knowledge is not gained by assembling data but by sympathetic contact, by intuition, by meditation, by silence, by inspiration, by prayer and long communion. I therefore recommend reading, not for diversion, nor for information alone, but for communion with great minds. The book that leads the soul out into the sunlight, points upward and bows out is always the best book. The man who can teach me to teach myself will help me more in the long run than the man who spoon-feeds me and makes me dependent upon him. The
